No Money For Navajo Code Talkers Museum

WINDOW ROCK – It's difficult for the Navajo Nation Council to say no to a request for funding anything having to do with Navajo Code Talkers, but when there's no money, well, bottom line – there's no money.

Several of these World War II-era warriors, assisted by walkers or supported by the arms of young relatives, made their way to the Council chamber Wednesday afternoon to back Delegate Larry Anderson as he offered an amendment to the Fiscal Year 2011 comprehensive budget.

Anderson requested a grant of $5 million from the income of the Veterans Trust Fund for the initial phase of construction of the Navajo Code Talkers Museum and Veterans Center. He had attempted the amendment during Tuesday's opening day of the budget session but later withdrew the motion after confusion arose over the funding source.

2. Probably not, but this certainly sounds like a good opportunity for private enterprise.

In this case the Code Talkers were asking for money from the Navajo Nation.

4. mj - There is no link!!! I brought this out as an idea for a project for one of

America's billionaires or some vets or even a civic minded group interested in the Code Talkers to begin a project to help them create a musuem and vets center. There are so few of them left and their role in bringing a close to WW2 in the Pacific is one of the most fascinatng and heroic tales of our war with Japan.

The role in the war with their unbreakable code was kept silent by our govt for many years after the war for national scurity reasons so few Americans, today, may still be unaware of the reason for the existence of the code talkers. The code became obsolete once Navajo became a written language

Their project was so secretive that even Navajo speaking Marines who served along with the code talkers were not aware of their role in the military. The chosen code talkers had to memorize several hundred key words with on the spot comprehension to be able to carry out their mission to pass on vital information to other code talkers in a different combat group. For instance, the Navajo word for "hummingbird" may have been the key word for "helicopter". There were key words for fighter planes, battleships,submarines, troop movements, etc.

Oh well, it is just an idea!!!
