Why are conservatives afraid of gays in the military?
after almost 18 years of service, and knowing plenty of gays in uniform, not once have I been molested in the shower...

2. Because their religious right Constituents only vote for non-gays...

Their opposition is just to get them power. What they really like is money.

3. I think you're on to it
Undoubtedly some republican politicians share the anti-gay views of many of their constituents. But many others probably don't care one whit. But you're not going to last too long as a republican without at least appearing to appease your constituency on social issues. Plus I think there's a certain sanctity connected to the military and many conservatives see homosexuality as somehow 'decadent' and a polluting influence. Interestingly, I think that was the reasoning behind the recent anti-gay law in Uganda -- many people there associate homosexuality with 'western decadence' and the colonial legacy.

DADT has survived for now (barely) and may get new temporary new life with more-republican congress. But I wouldn't bet on it long term. It's time has come and gone, even if it will hang on by a thread for a bit longer. Eventually the dam will break and you'll see a few republicans in Congress bucking the party line on this.

7. I don't think...
...the reps are going to get control of either chamber. It is looking less and less likely to me.

14. Haven't been looking at the polling data much
From what I can tell they might take the house by a small margin but will fall short in the Senate.

I am just sticking my finger in the wind and despite what the data says, I'm not sold.

4. The same reason they are afraid of
black people, brown people, people speaking foreign languages, people wearing turbans, people wearing yarmulkes, people in unions, street people, homeless people, and naked people. But for some reason, they are not afraid of the church deacon taking the kids on a swim outing.

5. They equate nudity with sexuality
Therefore, any situation where people are undressed together, must be a sexual situation, unless you're absolutely sure that everyone in the room is a red-blooded heterosexual.

9. A better question: how many conservatroids have actually served in the military?
They really need to get their fevered imaginations in check.
