Stop-Loss Claims Deadline Extended

Under the program, troops who have been stop-lossed since Sept. 11, 2001, or their surviving spouses are eligible for $500 for every month they were kept beyond their initial separation date. The program was slated to end in October, but now it has been extended to Dec. 3.

It was obvious they'd have to extend the deadline if troops who'd been back-door-drafted under Stop Loss didn't claim the special pay they'd earned. They may have to extend it even longer if those who've earned this entitlement are not getting the word or are reluctant to file out of fear that a claim may be used to recall them again.

The claims process ought to remain open until every last one of them is paid what he or she has earned.
