Staff Sgt. Hewitt declared MIA 44 years ago
KNOX - Forty-four years after Marine Staff Sgt. Samuel Hewitt of Koontz Lake went missing in action in Vietnam, his remains will finally come home.
Hewitt was listed MIA on March 22, 1966, and declared killed in action Dec. 1, 1975.
Now, his remains have been found.
They were identified in September by dental records. His family, now living in Medina, Ohio, was notified in early October.
Coincidentally, before the discovery, preparation was already under way to add Hewitt's name to a memorial in Starke County.
Hewitt graduated from Oregon-Davis High School in 1965, where he lettered in sports, sang in the choir and then gave his girl an engagement ring before going off to war.
