ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- A search was under way Wednesday for an overdue Air Force F-22 fighter jet based at a military facility near Anchorage.

Corinna Jones, a spokeswoman at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, said the jet was on a training mission and lost contact with air traffic control at 7:40 p.m. Tuesday. The plane carries one pilot.

The aircraft is assigned to Elmendorf's 3rd Wing, Jones said. The Air Force has not released the pilot's name ...

JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska – An aerial search was scheduled to continue throughout the night for the pilot of an Air Force F-22 fighter jet that crashed in a remote area of interior Alaska during a training exercise.

Rescue aircraft spotted the wreckage Wednesday about 100 miles north of Anchorage, and pararescuemen from the Alaska Air National Guard scoured the crash site until being flown out for the night.

"There's no sign of the pilot at this point, from what I've been told," guard spokesman Maj. Guy Hayes said.

But he said two Air Guard helicopters and a C-130 airplane planned to continue searching throughout the night for a sign that the pilot had ejected and survived, such as a parachute or a campfire.

12. If you hit a mountainside, or just level ground...

in bad visibility conditions or at night, you don't have time for much communication. Often none at all. If, as the info says, the crash scene is 100+ miles from base, there likely would be only intermittent contact with ATC. You don't talk a lot until you are closer in/on final approach.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Military officials Thursday were preparing to set up camps off the Denali Highway in interior Alaska in preparation for a ground search for an Air Force pilot missing after a crash of an F-22 Raptor.

Air Force personnel planned to search south of the highway, a 134-mile mostly gravel road that runs east from Cantwell, near the entrance to Denali National Park, to Paxson on the Richardson Highway.

Washington (CNN) -- Search-and-rescue teams have found "conclusive evidence" that the pilot of an F-22 aircraft that crashed while on a routine training mission in Alaska did not survive, the military said Friday.

Air Force Capt. Jeffrey Haney, who was assigned to the 525th Fighter Squadron, 3rd Wing, has been missing since the crash Tuesday night. Crews have found the wreckage of the plane.

Haney "did not eject from the aircraft prior to impact," said Air Force Col. Jack McMullen, 3rd Wing commander. McMullen made the remarks Friday in written and video statements.

A recovery team found part of the ejection seat and several life support items that Haney wore during the flight.

13. Memorial planned Monday for Alaska F-22 pilot

JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska - The Air Force has scheduled a memorial service Monday for an F-22 pilot who was apparently killed when his plane crashed 100 miles north of Anchorage.

Capt. Jeffrey Haney's remains have not been found, but the Air Force says evidence at the remote crash site indicates he could not have survived ...

At the request of his family, the memorial service will be open to personnel from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson and some of Haney's friends, but not the general public or news organizations ...
