VAMC's have a public education resource that I only became aware of last year. That is the Outreach Program.
What they do is to go out to local sites on Saturdays with trained personnel. They explain Veterans Health Administration benefits and procedures -- most veterans do not even get into the system. This OP crew also bring a large motor home to provide blood pressure, cholesterol checks and the like.
Anyway, we have had great luck connecting our city's Health Fair cycle with this VA Outreach Program.
Health Fair, here, goes off twice a year. It is located at either the high school or the recreation center. Health Fair is widely advertised -- so adding the VA Outreach to that city-produced flier works beautifully.
We got 35 people first time around. That was maybe 1/5th of the whole Health Fair. Everything from new-release Iraq vets to a WW II widow, age 87.
ANY TOWN CAN GET THE SAME SERVICE !
This VA Outreach Program is a first-rate way to start interaction with the VA. Btw: I am DAV member. I'm alive because of a wonderful VAMC.
