In Will Pitts "Cindy's Victory" thread a poster named Vinca
Edited on Sun Aug-14-05 03:08 PM by rateyes
had the idea of getting Cindy Sheehan nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. I posted the following, hoping Vinca would see it and start the thread since it was her idea...but, my response was a lot later than her post, so I'm not sure Vinca is still on. If Vinca has already posted as a separate thread, my apologies...but, I wanted to give credit where it is due.

This is a list of the kinds of folk who are allowed to nominate, I'm sure that someone here at DU fits one of the categories, or knows someone who does. Let's see if we can't make it happen. Let's keep it kicked until we get a positive affirmation from someone who says they will do it and report back.

The Nominators – Peace
Right to submit proposals for the Nobel Peace Prize, based on the principle of competence and universality, shall by statute be enjoyed by:

1. Members of national assemblies and governments of states;
2. Members of international courts;
3. University rectors; professors of social sciences, history, philosophy, law and theology; directors of peace research institutes and foreign policy institutes;
4. Persons who have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize;
5. Board members of organizations who have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize;
6. Active and former members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee; (proposals by members of the Committee to be submitted no later than at the first meeting of the Committee after February 1) and
7. Former advisers appointed by the Norwegian Nobel Institute.

The Nobel Peace Prize may also be awarded to institutions and associations.

Prize-Awarder: The Norwegian Nobel Committee, Oslo

http://nobelprize.org/peace/nomination/nominators.html

I'm sure there are several members of DU who qualify...let's do it!

In fact, I think Vinca (since it was Vinca's idea) ought to start a separate thread with the idea. Find someone qualified, as outlined, and get them to make the nomination---Nominations are made between September and February--the award is given to recipients after about a year's time.

once asked for his fax number, which they gave me!! I'll look to see if I still have it. In the meantime, any professors of history, law, theology, etc. out there?

nominate Will Pitt to do the application because he's really smart-I am amazed he is all over the place- in a cool way- but I'm sure some others are as well-LET US KNOW if anyone actually does it- and if a petition aimed for that would help!!!!

but, I'll keep checking the thread...I know that there is someone here at DU that could nominate her as well as those mentioned...the more nominations, the better chance she (or the group) would win, I would think. Any of you out there qualify...wouldn't it be great if you were the one to nominate, and we came away with a winner?

26. it's years down the road...
the nobel prize people don't hand out prizes until many years after the work was done. if you find the cure for cancer, you won't get the prize till many years later. same with cindy. this is a waste of time for now.

Number two, would you like to know what I think of your idea that its a waste of time?

no, you really wouldnt.

41. with the science nobel prize
it takes several years after the work to even be considered. I confess I don't know the rules for hte peace prize. didn't someone totally obscene get the prize, like Negroponte? One of the vietnam warmongers got the prize. sorry to be a party pooper. I support Cindy Sheehan 24-7 though. If peace nominations are on a shorter cycle, then go for it.

43. I thought all nobel prizes went on the same schedule
for the science prizes, it's automatic that it takes several years to nominate someone. because it takes time to sort out the significant contributions to science from the non-significant contributions. i assumes that for peace it works the same way. sorry. let's drop it and get back to holding Bush accountable, OK?

31. According to the Nobel web-site,
the nominations are made between September and February--the group meets in February to consider nominations....and, the prize is awarded later in the year---takes about a year...true, they might not give the prize in the first year, and do take re-nominations--but, it could happen in first year nominated.

29. Vinca here . . . thanks for starting the thread rateyes!
We had extremely bad weather roll in so I pulled the plug on the computers and just got back on this morning. I'm so excited you all agree with this idea! And the Jimmy Carter suggestion is excellent. I'm going to write a snail mail letter to him. I like the idea of the nomination being made for Cindy and the Gold Star organization, too. When Jody Williams (who, incidently, went to our local high school) won, she won with an organization. This is great! Even a nomination and not a win would do much for the cause of peace, but I have a feeling she would have a serious chance at winning. When you consider all the world except Bushco is against this war, it's in the realm of possibility.

40. I wrote
President Carter and The Norwegian Nobel Institute. Here is my e-mail I sent to Norwegian Nobel Institute.

To Whom It May Concern:

Here in The United States we have a wonderful women who has done more then any one else to bring attention to the war in Iraq. The people here in my Nation have had their heads in the sand for to long. This mother has brought it home to the heart of the American people that we're lied into a war that our Nation should have never been involved in. This mother lost her oldest child in Iraq. At this time she is camped out in Crawford Texas about 4 to 5 miles from the Bush Ranch. President Bush and he's people had said they might have her arrested and all she has done is to bring attention to the truth about the Iraq War. I would like to nominated Mrs Cindy Sheehan and the group that she belongs to, The Gold Star Families For Peace, for The Nobel Peace Prize.

Thank You For Your
Mrs.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
