Rear Adm. Michael McMahon took command of the Navy’s aircraft carrier program Monday.
McMahon replaces Vice Adm. David Architzel, who became the Navy’s deputy acquisition chief earlier this year. As program executive officer for aircraft carriers, McMahon will oversee the development of the Navy’s next-generation carrier, CVN-78, the Gerald Ford, and the delivery of the service’s final Nimitz-class carrier, the George H.W. Bush. McMahon is also tasked with the maintenance of existing carriers.
Guests at McMahon’s assumption ceremony included Adm. Kirkland Donald, director of nuclear propulsion; Vice Adm. Paul Sullivan, head of Naval Sea Systems Command; and Allison Stiller, deputy assistant secretary of the Navy for research, development and acquisition for ship programs. Acting Navy acquisition czar John Thackrah gave the keynote address at the ceremony, according to a statement issued by the Navy.
Previously, McMahon served as supervisor of shipbuilding, conversion and repair in Newport News, Va., where he was responsible for aircraft carrier and submarine ship construction, refueling and repair programs.
