‘Angels’ help keep the holidays festive at Torii Station

TORII STATION, Okinawa — The Angel Tree program is an Army Community Services tradition that is going strong at Torii Station, a holiday programs coordinator said Tuesday.

This year, 188 children will have a brighter holiday season thanks to the program, Allyson Glass said.

When units assigned eligible Army families to the station’s holiday food voucher program — in which families receive vouchers for commissaries — their children automatically were enrolled in the Angel Tree program, Glass said.

The age and gender of each enrolled child are listed on angel cards. Since Nov. 26, people have been selecting angel cards and buying a new, unwrapped, age-appropriate gift for the child on their card. Gifts average $10 to $20.

The program is getting an extra boost from the Marine Corps, Glass said. The Corps’ Toys for Tots program is providing a second gift for each child.

1. I love stories like this, and I remember Torii Station well

Nice little Army post. Their beach wasn't all that great, but the place was very quaint. It was down Hwy 58 from Kadena, but if you cut through the back streets you could get there in just a few minutes.
