Marine Corps may lay off 24,000 civilians

Marine Corps commanders, confronting an impasse over war spending, are due to deliver plans to lay off civilian employees to their leaders Thursday.

As many as 24,000 civilian employees could receive furlough notices in January, Commandant Gen. James Conway said Wednesday at a Pentagon news conference.

The Marine Corps expects to run out of wartime funding around March 24, he said.

“After 24 March, that’s a pretty serious drop in terms of capacity,” Conway said. “We’re hopeful that this thing gets resolved well before then, and we’re not faced with what would be some really tough decisions.”

The law requires employees and union presidents to get a 90-day advance warning about possible furloughs, Conway said.
