A political standoff between Congress and the White House won’t put Air Force civilians out of work — not yet, anyway.

Some Army civilians might get layoff notices before Christmas because of a financial crisis at the Pentagon, but the Air Force announced Wednesday that it has the money to keep its more than 140,000 civilian workers on the payroll.

“The Air Force does not view the possibility of civilian workforce furlough as an imminent issue,” Air Force officials said in the announcement. “While the Air Force continues to be fiscally challenged, the personnel budget is such that it would not become a pressing concern for some months.”

The crisis was brought about by a standoff between Congressional Democrats and President Bush.

Congress has not passed Bush’s $196 billion emergency war funding bill because it does not include a timeline for withdrawing troops from Iraq, but Bush has said he will veto any measure that includes such a timeline.
