BAGHDAD — A suicide car bomb killed one U.S. soldier and wounded two others Monday in northern Iraq, the military said.

The explosion occurred near the Task Force Iron soldiers’ vehicle in the mainly Sunni province of Salahuddin, according to a brief statement that provided no other details. Identities were not released pending notification of relatives.

Overall violence has dropped sharply nationwide, but it has been slower to fall in northern Iraq, which has seen a spate of deadly attacks in the past week.

The death raised to at least 3,887 the number of members of the U.S. military who have died since the Iraq war started in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.
