An airman from Hurlburt Field, Fla., will spend nearly 20 years in prison and pay almost $125,000 in restitution after pleading guilty to 21 charges that he stole sensitive equipment from the Air Force, sold it illegally to overseas buyers, then tried to have a witness in the case against him — a fellow airman — murdered.
Staff Sgt. Leonard Schenk, an aircrew life support apprentice with the 20th Special Operations Squadron at Hurlburt, pleaded guilty to all charges in federal civilian court on Sept. 18 and was sentenced Dec. 6 to serve 235 months — 19 years, seven months — in prison and pay $124,973.99 in restitution to the Air Force, according to court documents.
Schenk’s mother and accomplice, Jerri Stringer, pleaded guilty Sept. 26 to three counts related to stealing and selling government equipment, and she will be sentenced Tuesday.
Over the course of nearly two years beginning in summer 2005, Schenk stole night-vision goggles, helicopter flight helmets and handheld Global Positioning System units from his squadron and sold them illegally to buyers in Belgium, Germany and New Zealand.
He then arranged to pay $2,000 for the murder of a fellow airman who he had discovered was an informant working with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations.
