Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, has earned the Environmental Protection Agency’s Water Efficiency Leader Award.

The award, announced Dec. 3, recognizes the base’s improvement in water efficiency, base officials said.

Since 2004, Lackland has saved more than 342 million gallons of water as a result of several base initiatives.

The base has saved 21 million gallons of water by changing cooling systems at several facilities to air-cooled chillers. Installation of waterless urinals has saved more than 2.6 million gallons each year, and a new chemical treatment program for water used in chillers and boilers at 29 buildings has saved 40 million gallons of water during the past three years.

Installing water-efficient landscapes at several buildings has reduced irrigation needs by 1.5 million gallons, and the base uses recycled wastewater purchased from the San Antonio Water System to irrigate the Parade Field and Gateway Hills Golf Course. Using this recycled water has saved 274 million gallons of potable water since late 2005, officials said.
