New 93rd Wing consolidates air-ground ops
Staff report
Posted : Monday Dec 10, 2007 9:09:27 EST

In a change that recognizes the importance of close-air support missions, the Air Force is bringing many of its tactical air control party units under a single wing.

On Dec. 6, the Air Force announced that the 93rd Air Ground Operations Wing would be stood up at Moody Air Force Base, Ga., early in 2008. The 93rd will be part of 9th Air Force.

The move consolidates the 3rd Air Support Operations Group, Fort Hood, Texas and the 18th ASOG, Pope Air Force Base, N.C. The groups are home to airmen who deploy with the Army to control close-air support attacks and teams of weather specialists who travel with the Army and provide forecasts for Army bases in the U.S.

Also merged into the 93rd will be the 820th Security Forces Group at Moody. The 820th focuses on protecting overseas bases in or near combat zones.

The 1st ASOG at McChord Air Force Base, Wash., is not part of the merger. The 1st will continue to be answer directly to 12th Air Force headquarters.
