Suspected Army suicides set record
Suspected Army suicides set record
By Gregg Zoroya, USA TODAY

WASHINGTON — A record number of soldiers — 109 — have killed themselves this year, according to Army statistics showing confirmed or suspected suicides.

The deaths occur as soldiers serve longer combat deployments and the Army spends $100 million on support programs.

"Soldiers, families and equipment are stretched and stressed," Gen. George Casey, Army chief of staff, told Congress last month.

The Army provided suicide statistics to Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash. Her staff shared them with USA TODAY.

Those numbers show 77 confirmed suicides Army-wide this year through Nov. 27 and 32 other deaths pending final determination as suicides.

1. I am so sorry for the soldiers and their families.
An army of humans lead by unfeeling monsters. Every American is responsible for these needless deaths. My heart goes out to those that suffer, Kim

2. Terrible stat
Yet our service members vote Republican overwhelmingly while behind their backs Republicans laugh and snicker at their stupidity. If we had a draft the Iraq occupation would be over with that same day due to public outrage. Instead service members will endure the neglect of a failed administration.

3. where was the concern in 2000 when we had about 65
confirmed suicides, and nothing but a powerpoint presentation telling us to not let our soldiers off themselves.

Really the bigger issue I have is, why does no one care about our pay, medical care, separation or retirement issues until there's a war to b*tch about?
