BREMERTON, Wash. — The Navy has named a new commander for the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and maintenance facility.

Capt. Mark R. Whitney will relieve Capt. Daniel Peters to be the 47th shipyard commander at the Bremerton base.

The native of South Portland, Maine, has more than 20 years of experience in Navy ship and submarine maintenance and construction.

He served as the operations officer at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard from 2004 to 2006. He has also worked at Newport News on the construction of the Harry S. Truman, and at Norfolk on the Theodore Roosevelt.

He served as chief engineer of the Theodore Roosevelt and worked in support operations in military operations in Iraq.
