SharonRB? A question about Michigan
How does the current situation (Dems pulling their names from the ballot) help or hurt the petition drive? I would almost think it is good news.

1. i do not think that gore would step in if other dems are not.
i think that it sends a strong message if there are enough signatures, but i think that he would not "cross the picket line" so to speak. but maybe he would have some influence to get them to move the date back? maybe there is something. some compromise. :shrrug: can of worms, i guess.
the whole thing of getting signatures without him is a hard one. does anyone have any idea what state laws are regarding this?

2. The state of Michigan has a pdf that cover the 2008 primary and the rules
Petitions for candidates is covered at the top of page 2. http://www.michigan.gov/documents/sos/Ballot_Pres_20081_208311_7.pdf

3. I think it helps a lot.
The DNC can do what they wish with the Delegates. States choose whether they want delegates or momentum.

But for the dnc-picket angle, as an MI issue, i think it helps greatly.

The combination of press and percieved discontent with the process and candidates should make the signature effort easier.

And frankly, if the sig effort works, having those names off can only help.

Besides /wink. GORE didn't cross the 'picket-line' WE did.

4. It's a mess, Mabus
There's a meeting on Sunday to decide what to do, which I'm not going to, but in the meantime we're still gathering signatures. It can't hurt anything. In the next five weeks the state party exec committee has to decide whether we're going to partcipate in the primary or go back to our original caucus plan. We could even do both, with the primary just being for show and the caucus being used to actually seat delegates.

If Gore jumps in for the primary, we're still going to need the signatures. If we wind up with a caucus, we'll have names to contact to get people out to vote.

6. I figured it would be
Although I will admit that when I heard that Edwards, Obama and Richardson had pulled out I thought that it was pretty good news because it was causing such chaos. I know it can't be any fun for all of you but it does throw a wrench into the mix that wasn't anticipated when you all started collecting signatures.
