Like many of you, I have written to Gore encouraging him to run. My first letter to him was back in January 2006 right after his MLK speech and was evidently too early to receive the form letter, as I never heard back from that letter.
Last month I thought I'd try one last hurrah, so I sent him a letter containing my favorite cartoon -- the one with the hysterical women saying "for chrissake's Al, run already!" If nothing else, I figured he'd get a chuckle from it.
Received my reply yesterday, and thought I'd share:
Dear _____,
Thank you so much for your letter encouraging me to seek the presidency in 2008. I appreciate your kind words and I am very grateful for your continued support.
While I do not have any plans to be a candidate again, I intend to remain very active in fighting for the causes we believe in and working to ensure that the Democratic Party becomes a more effective voice for the values that you and I hold dear. I hope that you will join me in continuing to promote the vision we share for our country.
One way you can do that is to engage with me in a campaign of a different sort -- to educate the American people about the climate crisis facing our nation and indeed, the world. I hope you will learn everything you can about the crisis -- watch "An Inconvenient Truth" or read the book -- and then turn that knowledge into action. You can further our efforts by signing up on www.algore.com, and together we can rise to meet this global challenge. We need you!
Tipper joins me in sending our best wishes and thanks.
Sincerely,
Al Gore
Is this the same letter everyone else has gotten? I'm not remembering the first two paragraphs being worded this way. I guess I'm still in fantasyland -- I don't see this letter as a categorical denial, and yet, how could he get in at this point? If he does declare after the NH forum, what will his modus operandi be? Thoughts?
