Gore draw for the Democrats?

Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton (3/1) are tied in the contest for the Democratic Party presidential nomination, which could suggest an opportunity for a third candidate: Al Gore.

While John McCain puts his feet up in preparation for the presidential race proper, the Democrats are heading – literally – for extra time in their contest, with the threat of electoral (and metaphorical) penalties hanging over them. And that could make the former VP look a value bet to get his party’s nod ahead of the dueling Obama and Clinton.

All of which adds credence to the argument – only being whispered across the Atlantic at the moment, but bound to get louder as the Clinton-Obama slugfest continues – that Al Gore should step in and take over.

This was forwarded to me from Farrell Seiler in NH. He is suggesting (and I think it's a good idea) that we expand the letter writing to cover the super delegates in each of our states. He said he was trying to develop a data base of some such for that; but, I suspect (although I haven't checked yet) that there must be a web listing in each state's Dem. party site of the supers from that state. I will be checking on NY. Assuming I can find the names, I will send the same letter I'm sending to Dean and others, asking them to consider the Gore/Obama ticket to solve the mess they look like they're headed for at the convention.

I'm still waiting to see if the original draftgore.com folks get a national site up. As I mentioned earlier, Farrell is trying to get a national site up and running. Keep you eyes open and start trying to track down the super delegates in your respective states. NOW IS THE TIME FOR ALL OF US TO COME TO THE AID OF OUR PARTY AND MAKE SURE IT DOESN'T DESTROY ITSELF AS IT HEADS TO THE CONVENTION!

2. Here's a site where I found a complete list of supers

It gives names and association. Some of the ones who are not political people might be hard to find addresses for, but I'll keep looking to see if there is a better list somewhere. The ones who are House of Senate members, or State officials (except for about to be non-Gov. Spitzer in NY) will have addresses at their political offices.

3. Here's more information

http://superdelegates.org/DNC_Members. This site lists all super delegates by State with indications as to whether they are presently committed to a candidate or not. There does seem to be some confusion, however. When I was looking at the ones for NY, the ones listed as uncommitted, when you went to his/her individual page it sometimes indicated that they were committed. In any case, what I'm going to be trying to do for NY is get as much info. as possible for these super delegates (committed/uncommitted; address - snail or e-mail) and then post that with a suggestion for more letters to the roughly 60 contacts I have from the notes I have sent to the long e-mail list I had of Gore supporters in NY (plus some local friends). The 60 or so contacts are all (or mostly all) folks who said they were enthusiastic about the effort to get Gore's name back in the mix. I am going to be pointing out to them in the note I send them now that this is a strategy only if it looks like the Dems. are self-destructing and neither Hillary nor Barack have the necessary delegate strength to get the nomination. I'll keep in touch with Farrell in NH and see if/when/how he is coming with, I think, trying to mount on a national web site the kinds of information I am trying to track down for NY.

I'd be grateful for any suggestions/additions/deletions to these kinds of suggestions that DU folks might have. The postings that keep showing up here of some "national" bloggers talking about a late turn to Gore keeps my enthusiasm up. Hopefully it's doing the same for everyone.
