Hillary, however, has exposed significant weaknesses in Obama’s candidacy. The first African American candidate with a chance at winning the presidency has trouble connecting with the so-called Reagan Democrats. I’d like to think this has more to do with the fact that many of the blue-collar workers that have trouble with Obama are anti-intellectual rather than racially bigoted. To be fair, Hillary also has to contend with stereotypes and misogynistic attitudes that unfairly hamper her ability to be judged on the basis of her message, record and character.

Hillary probably cannot catch Obama in terms of the pledged delegates or the popular vote count. But her efforts to pin the "elitist" label on her rival could well cost Democrats the election in November. It would be a catastrophe for the Democratic Party, the country and progressive values if the Clinton’s perpetual selfishness helps hand the White House to George Bush’s designated successor, John McCain. The best way to avoid political suicide -- particularly if Obama cannot convincingly close the deal in the remaining contests – would be for Democrats to turn to Al Gore to head the ticket with Obama as his running mate.

2. I am leaning more and more toward the hope

that Obama closes the deal and that a contingency plan will not be necessary. The resulting disaffection of the Obama and Clinton supporters if the Gore/Obama solution is not done just right will end up losing us the GE too.

This is certainly a nailbiter, folks.

3. I am in the same place you are

W/the long, drawn out fighting between Obama and Clinton, I'm afraid a Gore "unity leader" will not set well w/either candidates' supporters.

If Al Gore had given us just the tiniest heads up that he wanted to run, I would be feeling much different now.

Having said that, I am still keeping my sig line until the convention is over.

5. I am of the same mind....just a glimmer of hope a few months

ago...and I think the troops would have rallied behind Gore...it all looks so dismal to me now. However my sigline stays until I find a saatisfying solution to the problem.

6. All I've got to say,

and I've said it before: KEEP THE FAITH!! Having just listened to a lot of the Sunday morning chatter, one does get the impression that if it is not Obama, there will be hell to pay, especially in the black community. On the other hand, wouldn't they react better to a Gore/Obama team than losing outright to Hillary. At least Gore has not attacked him on all sorts of issues, and given aid and comfort to John McCain for attacks the Republicans will surely unleash against him in the Fall.

That being said, I'm going to be very curious to see how our web site does (coming shortly) and if we can really get people to start writing letters to super delegates. Unless a bunch of super delegates start lining up behind one of these candidates soon, the primary season will grind to its inevitable end (Obama ahead by a little in pledged delegates) and I suspect, in spite of the urging of Dean and others, there are going to be some super delegates still sitting and waiting all the way to the Convention. That leaves the door open for us to at least get a few toes in that door opening.
