I've X'd out any names:
Dear Organizers:
We're in full tilt boogie right now with the promotional book tour for The Assault on Reason. We had thought that working the events the way we planned would get our message across to Al Gore in a real and personal way, and apparently, we were right. I've taken the liberty of copying a post from L.A. organizer and Regional Director XXXX describing what happened in L.A. last night. Read through it, get pumped, and don't think for a second that our hard work isn't worth the effort. What XXX says happened last night is exactly what we were hoping for. It was a smashing success, and Gore received our message loud and clear. Imagine repeating that in city after city as the book tour rolls out across America? Let's do it!
XXXXX's post below:
The Beverly Hills kick-off book signing was a HUGE success!
Here are ideas and things we learned that we hope can now follow Gore as he travels onward.
Pins & Stickers: We succeeded in getting everyone (close to 2,000 people) wearing either an Al Gore 2008 sticker or pin. We collected a buck or two for the pins about the half the time, but gave away the stickers.
Signs & Banners: We purchased a large quantity of signs, and had a great banner donated. The professional signs and banner really looked sharp! The media was made well aware of our campaign signs, as well as Gore himself when he drove up having just come from the Larry King interview. He stopped a good while and waved at us holding our signs and yelling RUN AL RUN!
We hung the banner from the balcony in the theater then XXX, XXX, and I carried it right up to Al and he said "I saw that hanging up there in the balcony, thank you." Gore also thanked almost everyone who wore a Gore 2008 t-shirt. You can order everything online at -- officialgorestore2008.com
The homemade signs did not look nearly as good as the professionally made ones. I would strongly urge ordering a large quantity of signs and going with homemade stickers if low on funds!!!
XXXXX is also passing along our banner to San Francisco to be used at Gore's next book tour stop.
Petitions & Sign Ups: We were told by Kalee Kreider (Communications Director at the Office of the Honorable Al Gore & Tipper Gore) that the petitions we were hand delivering Al Gore during the book signing should have had a space for address and contact information so that she could send "Thank You" cards.
We had people take one petition and pass it behind them in line so that we could all hand deliver the following letter we got from XXXX:
Al Gore, Please Run For President
Dear Vice President Gore:
Americans from every corner of our nation are calling on you. Please listen to our plea and run for the Democratic nomination for the presidency of the United States in 2008.
Never before has America needed a leader of your stature, vision and experience more than now. The next presidential election will be the most crucial one in our history, and you are the only Democrat who can unite the country and lead us to victory. And this country -- indeed, the entire world -- cannot afford anything less.
Our nation and the planet itself are entering “a period of consequences,” as you so well stated in “An Inconvenient Truth,” but in more ways than one. We are ruled by a government of the powerful and for the powerful -- a government that tramples our Constitution, wages unjust war in our name, sacrifices our economic future, and puts our very planet on the endangered species list.
America and the world need you now more than ever. Be our candidate. Run for president. And we pledge that we'll be there for you every day until the last vote is counted.
This takes up about half a page and should leave enough room to add a space per Kalee's request in the future. I think it was also a hint that we should hand deliver these petitions to Al Gore himself so that he gets the picture. The passing it back strategy seemed to work pretty well. Though if there is enough time and people it would be better to have people working the lines getting volunteers and contact information for our own records, and also being able to make certain that everyone gets a petition that they can personally hand to Gore as he signs books. As it was, I think he still got the picture based on almost everyone wearing a pin or sticker or shirt or combination of all three.
Overall a great night with supporters from all across the state & country. So many people to thank....THANK YOU ALL!
And I sincerely hope that we have some national uniformity in our messages and designs because I know for sure that Kalee Kreider & Al Gore have not only seen them on our end, but she personally asked me which group I was with and I said flat out "WE ARE ALL WORKING TOGETHER" Then I listed off all the different sites & groups.
It's grassroots I know, but it's also well organized as is evident by the fact that groups from all over Cali came to urge Gore to run -- no doubt he will be our next president if we keep up the momentum. -----------------------------------------
You got that, right, XXX! Thanks so much to you and XXX and all of you in CA for making that event a success! The spirit of cooperation and unity we have as a group (a very large group, at that!) is so uplifting. Gore groups sharing personnel, materials, ideas, working together to make this happen. That's what it's all about! Let's build on what happened in L.A. and keep the momentum building across the country. We can make this happen. RUN, AL . . . RUN! XXXX.
