Part of the reason the zealots don't care about New Orleans

I think a large part of the reason the shiny-eyed pod people, the Armageddonist hordes, don't care about New Orleans isn't so much classist or racist (certainly there are elements of both, however) is because they're salivating with glee over the impending End Times. The glassy-eyed Rapturist fundies see this as a Sign. So, since their GAWD sent the floods (wait, wait, didn't that same GAWD promise Noah never to flood the earth again?), we should let His Will Be Done and let the End Times commence.

I swear, some of these people live every day in hopes of seeing people die in torment. It's all they live for. Sick, sick, sick twisting of the rantings of a sleep-deprived hallucinatory old man alone on an island...
