"That's what loving Jesus is all about..."

Being in a foreign country and WAY behind the U.S. culture curve, I only recently saw the movie Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story/. It's nearly a year old now and flopped at the box office, but is playing on a sat-cable channel here in Egypt.

The movie is a great send-up of pop-music biopics, and takes some really sharp jabs at Walk The Line. Hey, I loved Johnny Cash as a musician, but I have to agree with the great critic Nick Tosches: "Johnny Cash and his God can be an especially tedious act."

In the flick, Jenna Fischer makes her first appearance as "Darlene" with a humongous cross dangling between her half-exposed breasts and brags about singing in her church choir.

A few minutes later, she and John C. Reilly sing "Let's Duet..."

Cox: In my dreams you're blowing me...some kisses.
Darlene: That's one of my favorite things to do.
Cox: You and I could go down...in history.
Darlene: That's what I'm praying to do with you.

Together: Let's duet, in ways that make us feel good,
Let's duet, and make that sacred sound,
Put two and two together,
Perfect harmony we found.
We know it's only natural, lets duet!

Cox: I'm going to beat off...all my demons.
Darlene: That's what loving Jesus is all about.
Cox: Looking in your eyes, I start believing.
Darlene: Let's bring this whisper to shout.

Chorus

Cox: Did i hear you sighing?
Darlene: What are you implying?
Cox: Look a little tired.
Darlene: Music's got me wired.
Cox: Pretty good looking
Darlene: Boy we're really cooking
Together: Now!

Cox: I just want to make out…what you're saying.
Darlene: Read my lips. It's what you're looking for.
Cox: Here I am a-sneaking up behind ya.
Darlene: You can always come in my backdoor.

Chorus

I needed that.

I've heard it wasn't the best movie in the world but I think I'm going to have to watch it now just for that.

edit: Found it on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEGD6D1PvIU

2. Worth a look. Lots of snarky in-jokes etc.
Even the casting looks like an in-joke. Jack Black as Paul McCartney and Jack White as Elvis Presley. That alone should induce coronaries in some older Elvis fans.

It's the same production crew who did Knocked Up etc., so the humor is not exactly subtle.

You'll probably appreciate it more if you have some knowledge of Ancient Rock History 101. It hits just about all those targets: Jerry Lee Lewis (12-year-old wife), Brian Wilson (running amok in the studio, live goat to accompany an orchestra), Johnny Cash (saved by a good woman+Jesus, destroying bathrooms), Ray Charles (childhood trauma makes Dewey Cox lose...his sense of smell), etc.

And John C. Reilly does an almost frightening Bob Dylan imitation, complete with "deep" (i.e., hilariously non-sensical) lyrics.

The version I saw was 90 minutes, but the Extended Version on the DVD is 2 hours. I haven't seen the longer one yet.
