From In These Times (a liberal magazine) - am I the only one who finds this offensive?

The magazine does not have a link to this online that I can find, but I found one on the cartoonist's website:


I'm not sure what the heck the cartoonist thinks he's saying, or if he has any clue that it's (I think) offensive. Actually, I think it's a pretty dumb cartoon - perhaps he had writer's block regarding the election.

I wrote the magazine, to which I subscribe, to object to the implication that Obama's win and an individual's "getting religion" were related in some way..... :wtf:

1. Here's what's most obviously offensive about it

Obama's win was entirely due to people here on Earth: the people who worked their nuts off to make it happen, and the regular voters who weighed up the issues and decided he was the best person for the job. Plus, of course, the people on the other side who screwed up. But this cartoon reduces it to a magic man sprinkling pixie dust. As always, like a slimy co-worker, God takes the credit for other people's hard work.

2. It's terribly insulting.

Obviously atheists are mean, bitter, pessimistic, nasty people. One bit of hope "cures" them and brings them back into the fold.

I've decided I agree with the reply here that thought it was just lame, not intentionally bigoted. Still, if *that's* what he comes up with when he's stuck for an idea....

3. I don't take it literally

Remember the old expression when anything quite unexpectedly GREAT happens, "well, there's IS a god."

It's a joke in our household (all atheists). Just a joke.


Who knows if that the mag's take or it's a real put-down to atheists?

4. It's a stupid cartoon

by a believer who was trying too hard to be witty.

5. It's stupid - but I'm not particularly offended.

It's just more of the same; Xtian's are always convinced that something will 'turn' atheists and bring them 'back to jesus.'

Frankly, if you think about it, it could be insulting to Obama - I know the cartoonist was playing on the 'hope' message, but it could just as easily be the 'miracle' message, which implies that the only way Obama could get elected was via a miracle . . .

6. It is a bit of the old and false idea of

"no atheist in foxholes" but I see it as a stupid cartoon looking for a cheap and easy punch line. Yeah it could be taken as an offense and I might if I thought of it, refer to it as an example of the prejudice against non-believers but I don't take offense because it was just a thoughtless/careless cartoon.

8. Argument from incomplete devastation.

The fact that after eight years of a faith-based disaster we finally have a guy who is mostly reasonable and who can begin to mitigate the damage means there must be a god.

9. I saw it as "Holy shit he won. Maybe there is a god?"

A fairly common reaction was surprise I bet. I could be wrong, but that is what I thought when I read it.
