If its a miracle when people survive a plane crash....
Then what about the no survivor type crashes..Did they all piss off God somehow so he decided to kill them all?

I really really hate the ITS A MIRACLE crap that starts in when stuff like the plane going down in the Hudson River today.
Chalk it up to the pilot's skill and the closeness of ferries..
aargh.:banghead:

1. I met a nurse who says the hand of god was keeping her daughter afloat....
after she was severely injured in a diving accident. I wanted to say that god fucked up by not making sure the girl didn't get hurt in the first place.

So, yeah...it's screwed up logic.

2. Why did God fling those poor geese into the engines?
I'm contacting PETA, he could have just as easily crashed that plane without murdering them.

Everyone knows you can't trust those militant Québécois geese.

12. Wait, wait, wait let me get this straight..........
The geese that tried to take down this plane down were Canadian, illegal alien, Taliban, demon spawn geese controlled by Satan? You forgot to mention that the Geese were gay and had brown feathers. Good thing God gracefully saved this plane, I mean with everything going on in the world he decided to give us this one miracle thus showing he is on America's side.

8. You poor deprived child
I thought everybody knew that when babies are born it is the miracle of birth. When babies are stillborn, it is Satan's handy work.

That's the fool proof nature of religion. The miracles are unfalsifiable and so are the excuses.

9. That illogic makes my head hurt . . .
I think I'll stick with the idea that the pilots' did a fantastic job of setting it down soft - if one can 'grease a landing' (as my pilot dad used to say) on water, they did.

Kudos to them and to the cabin crew who got folks out in a relatively orderly fashion. Kudos to the passengers for not freaking out and behaving like cattle trapped in a box canyon.

And that's as far as I'm willing to take it.

*except for adding that sometimes it sucks to be a goose*

11. Exactly.
I'll give the pilot credit for being the hero because he did everything against the odds to keep those people alive in those moments when the plane was going down. There was no "God" landing that plane, so no miracle.

14. Arrrrrgh!
I spent several minutes ranting at the TV over the "miracle" rescue.

All it does it take away from what the REAL heroes did.

15. Miracle means a highly unexpected outcome.
It's just one of the definitions of miracle.

16. Yes, God chose to murder them all
Now, consider the incident a few years ago, when a school bus carrying Sunday School children ages 7 to 10 slid on an icy bridge, crashed through the guard fence and plunged into the fast moving, icy water below, leaving no survivors.

20. Not everyone who calls a building "gigantic" believes in giants.
Edited on Sat Jan-17-09 06:55 PM by HamdenRice
It's just a metaphor.

Because the odds of a plane that had lost all engine power safely landing on water without breaking up or sinking are so low, it is appropriate to use the metaphor, "miraculous" -- ie like a miracle.

That doesn't mean that everyone using that metaphor thinks it was literally a miracle, because many of those same people are praising the skill of the pilot -- any more than someone who describes a building as "gigantic" literally believes in the existence of giants or a race of huge savages who were the sons of Gaia and Uranus.
