1. I didn't think I could get any angrier today.
I guess it doesn't help that I just saw "Religulous" for the first time today. How dare he moralize about "tone"? The "tone" argument is always used by a majority to keep the status quo. It's bullshit.

2. Yes, I see it didn't take long for the faulty reasoning to come out
about how if a communist state is officially atheist, and said state commits atrocities, then the atrocities were done in the name of atheism. and of course that means that atheists have thus killed more people in the name of atheism than religious people have done in the name of religion.

18. I'm in "wait and see" mode on unrec
I support it in principle: it's just a form of democracy, and it was always too easy to get threads to the "greatest" page, to the extent that that place became largely worthless. But only time will tell how well the new feature works (assuming it stays). Some of the whining against the feature has been breathtaking: did you see the writer who was all "but I need my stuff to appear on the 'greatest' page to increase my visibility and drive visitors to my own website"? The sense of entitlement some people have is amazing.

22. No, I missed that one, lol!
I love how many of these OHMYGAWDIT'SJUSTNOTFAIRWHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHI'MSUPPOSEDTOBETHEPRETTIESTONEATMYWEDDING! posters were *FOR* the block poster option. Wanting to cement their place on TGP and silence their critics, they are terrified the lack of substance in their vanity posts will be revealed once people stop doing the "Oh, what the hell, I don't understand it but I don't want to be the only one NOT reccing this thread" dance and take a closer look.

I was on the fence but I'm starting to lean on the side of holding posters (not just lefty journalists) to a higher standard. Look what happened to Rag Story and Truthiness.out once the heat was turned on.

I never look at TGP, it's always been a popularity contest and doesn't represent the majority of DUers.

If you want to hang with the popular kids you have to play the game.

Fuck that, most DU atheists have never gone along to get along, it gives us hives.

I've seen single atheists take on dozens of angry believers in GD, you just can't kill us, we thrive on the anger coming from the oppressed majority.

Imagine the usual suspects posting their atheist/skeptic/glbt baiting threads with the ability to censor their critics.
Having their own echo chambers wasn't enough, they wanted to control all of the main forums too.

It was a horrible idea, and to admin's credit, a short lived one.

All of the wailing and hand wringing about the unrec option "silencing" voices is nothing but hyperbole and hypocrisy.

19. I do not see what the fuss is with the Rec/Unrec...
It is the same as NOT recommending a thread when you unrec it.

It is not as though that when the thread goes negative that it disappears, some people think of this as popularity contest and that is just absurd.

21. I think the issue I have with it is that it will be used by the lazy in
less than intelligent ways. Not that that doesn't happen already; unrec just adds a new level of absurdity.

I read a thread this morning (I think - last night, maybe?) that showed just how some people will use it. They were complaining because the actual number of 'unrecommends' doesn't show - just the <0. They said that was unfair and people should know how many unrecs a post has so they can determine it's worth.

Is this the problem of the idiots who choose to trust something like 'unrec' (or 'rec' for that matter) rather than developing an opinion for themselves? Of course. But it is also a potentially slippery slope, as people use the feature to attack posters they don't like, regardless of the topic and more people use the feature as an alternative to actual thought.

Combine this with the increasing number of people who complain if you post more than three sentences (and they had better be simple sentences - compound sentences are beyond them) and refuse to read a 'long' post (i.e., anything more than three sentences) and DU is well on its way to total idiocracy.

DU worked just fine before 'rec' and the Greatest Page came along. I wish we would lose both of these popularity contest tools.

A lot of the newbie atheists in GD are NOT helping, I love a good knock down/drag out as much as anybody but when you wave the "sky-daddy" flag in front of the apologists you're just asking for a massacre that leaves everybody pissed off. One attack op on christianity will spawn weeks of backlash.

I tell them I think original sin is a horrible idea, and they say "Nooooo, LOTS of christians don't believe in it, yada yada..." and they start coming up with pretty much explicitly non-xtians like Unitarians and say they are Christians...I've yet to meet a UU Christian.

They also say they don't require people to recite a creed, yada yada....again only the UUs don't require a creedal test, and they are not xtian.

48. It's the only way to "successfully" dodge the arguments against their religion.
The god they end up defending is some detached, impersonal, nebulous concept of "love." Having successfully abstracted the concept into meaninglessness, they declare victory in their minds and resume heaping on the baggage of a man-god, having "sacrificed" himself for our "sins," and all that other flotsam and jetsam.

50. Oh cripes, that asshole
The board's biggest crybaby. Someone saying something bad about God somewhere, anywhere, gives him the green shits. Yet, he had a conniption over an interfaith rally because there's only one true God and Real Christians wouldn't rub elbows with Hindoolians, even for common cause. Groused over the UCC's "welcoming" ads, because accomodating homer-sekshuls is un-biblical pandering. And as thin-skinned as he is about his religion, he starts taunting threads with ROFL icons ridiculing DUers for their stances on issues he doesn't like.

He's a breathing specimen of the kind of Christian that gets up everybody's nose, including most other Christians around here.

Not that it matters, really.

I really don't like the idea they have, that you just are NOT supposed to criticize xtians or the failings of their bloodthirsty superstitious and illogical book and doctrines.

I have been reprimanded over my new handle, that I will have to "change my attitude about xtianity" before i manifest any light, or I better change, yada yada......

My new handle was suggested by somebody over in ASAH, which the xtians tend to think is woo-woo airyfairy nonsense.... I don't believe anything the xtians say and I take ASAH with a large box of salt, b/c of my skeptical nature--but I will admit that everything that happens (gut feelings, hunches) is not able to be explained rationally or stuffed in a box.

I can't find the pile-on that happened because he was acting like a dink, though.

Check out how he puts a point on it at the end, it's a favorite trope of his -- "Is it any wonder teh religious right thinks the left is Godless?" Usually, it's our wariness of church/state entanglements that makes him fret about our reputation. Here, a full bore God-a-palooza makes us "godless" as well.

58. It's really difficult for some people to let go of the idea that humans are special, superior,
and favored above all other species. We were all indoctrinated at a very young age, and those of us in this group have been able to slog thru the shit and see the fairy tale for what it is. It took me a long time, however, I believed in a superior being as little as 15 years ago, when my Atheist ex-husband refused any mention of God in our marriage ceremony. So this is where the pretzel logic comes from: fear. The same place the RW idiots get most of their arguments as well. Let's demonize the Atheists and Agnostics, sling shit at them so we can trivialize their message and go back to our comfort zone.
