1. No thanks
Seems fairly pointless to me. This one is more interesting (though I wouldn't have participated in it either):

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=8653534&mesg_id=8653534

A simple yes/no poll asking whether prayers increase Obama's safety, with no commentary attached, is, apparently, horribly offensive to a number of DUers, and the person who posted in "need(s) a good kicking". There are some mighty thin-skinned people around.

3. I probably do deserve a good kicking, but not for creating that poll.
I was surprised by the reaction that poll received.

4. Might I ask why?

Anytime there is a poll about religion on DU, the majority seems to come out as non religious. It's one of the reasons I still have DU as my home page.

However, I often wonder why they never visit "us" "down here" in the Ath and Ag Forum.

Edit for arrogance - I'm working to fix this personal attribute

5. Many may not know this group exists.
Many people seem to stick to GD, GD: P, and/or the Lounge.

17. I think many atheists don't care to discuss or criticize religion
Edited on Sat Sep-19-09 01:16 AM by jonnyblitz
for fear of offending the always offended religionists. you will notice in threads where religion is criticized some will post: "I am an atheist BUT i don't like all this religion bashing by all you other mean atheists": blah blah blah, etc. I call them "atheist BUTs".

and that could be why poll results show there are many atheists at DU but most don't post in this forum. they don't want to associate with a gang of atheist "fundamentalist" meanies who make them look bad.

8. It's not so surprising
Often, the degree of outrage a theist displays is proportional to the ridiculousness of the belief on which you've cast doubt. Ask a Catholic about confession, and you might get a half-sensible answer, but question the magic cracker ritual and they'll go ballistic. You might be able to have a reasonably civil debate about original sin, but say that prayer might not make sense and you're suddenly Hitler crossed with Stalin. I think it's largely because you're reinforcing the doubts they secretly have; the stronger the doubt, the greater the chance that your words will start the whole thing unravelling, so the louder they have to chant "LA LA LA I CAN'T HEAR YOU". Also, you were polite, so they had to work harder to portray you as the bad guy.

13. Quite a ruckus, huh?
What was he thinking, posting that in there?

There is a woman in my office that took credit
for her friend getting a job, because she had
"prayed real hard" for her to get one, and ...

lo and behold, it happened!

What did that poster want? Cookies?

I'm just surprised that the standards didn't show up:

Shit in one hand and pray with the other...see which one fills up faster.

or..

Nothing fails like prayer!

P.S. I thought we were being NICE! That's how militant I am!

15. I like how atheists are "childish" and "mean" in their responses
Yet the more, persecuted Christians are loving, tolerant and "true" progressives.

I especially like how the people supporting that poster outnumber those who don't by around 3 to 1, yet the Christians still claim that DU is "anti-religious" and et cetera. I guess the persecution complex knows no political divide.
