Third atheist billboard goes up in Moscow

11:12 AM PDT on Friday, September 18, 2009

By KREM.com

MOSCOW, Idaho -- It reads "Millions are good without God" and it appeared on Tuesday in Moscow.

It is the third billboard of its kind to go up in the area, part of an advertising campaign by the American Humanist Association.

AHA billboard placed in Moscow, ID.

The AHA says the campaign is meant to spread awareness. Roy Speckhardt, executive director of the AHA says "too many people think that morality is the exclusive domain of the religious--we're here to prove the assumption is wrong."

The billboard is on Highway 95, just south of Moscow near the Sweet Avenue cross street, and the AHA says they will run the ad through January.

This past spring the AHA ran an ad in the area that read "Don't believe in God? You are not alone," and in the fall another saying "Want a better world? Prayer not required."

"We've had great success with this advertising campaign," said Speckhardt.

Similar campaigns by other organizations have gone up Phoenix, AZ; Philadelphia, PA and Charleston, SC. The AHA has also ran bus ads that read "Why believe in a God? Just be good for goodness sake." Those were run in Washington, D.C. during the 2008 winter holiday season.

The AHA was founded in 1941 and has its headquarters in Washington, D.C. They profess a belief in humanism, which is a progressive philosophy of life that, without theism, affirms human responsibility to lead ethical lives.

The replacement billboard is thought to have been vandalized early Wednesday morning

The original billboard was vandalized in late October

MOSCOW, Idaho. - An atheist billboard in Moscow, Idaho has been vandalized for the second time in two weeks.

The billboard originally read "Millions are good without God" but was partially obscured with blue paint to now read "Millions are good with God."

In the first instance the word "without" was completely blacked out, after which the AHA quickly replaced the billboard.

"The irony here is worth noting," said President of the American Humanist Association, David Niose. "Some individuals are committing criminal acts while apparently claiming that their religious view of the world leads to good behavior. It's not a very convincing argument on their part."

The Moscow Police Department notified the AHA Tuesday morning. They believe the ad defaced between 1 and 3 am. The AHA has alerted the billboard company who leased the space, Lamar Outdoor, who said they will start leaving the lights on round the clock. The AHA will be replacing the billboard but hasn't yet decided whether to go with the same design.

"This is not just vandalism, it is religiously motivated vandalism which attempts to silence a minority viewpoint," added Niose. "Everyone, not just humanists, should be concerned about such acts."

The billboard is the third billboard advertisement the organization has displayed in the Moscow area.
