"Suffering is sometimes necessary"
I really despise people who make the claim that suffering is somehow part of some grand plan. It sickens me when I read it here on DU of all places. :puke:

1. wow.
pretty fucking stupid.

not surprised, though. pretty common sentiment amongst religious folks. the only way they can cope with reality, and bad events, is to lie to themselves and consider it part of their "destiny" or some fucked up plan. makes them feel fuzzy inside.

that's easier than facing the facts and seeking professional help through trying times. same thing as praying. it's easier to pray than to do shit for yourself.

3. they 'consider it part of their "destiny" or some fucked up plan' ...
...created by their "good" and "loving" god!

Therefore, bringing suffering to others is godly, too.

If you call god good, and attribute everything that happens (even that which is clearly evil) to him, then you have declared evil to be good.

A big part of why Xtians are such bastards in my opinion.

2. Mother Teresa was big on suffering.
I've always known this, but I googled her anyway. Here's an example of what I found:

http://www.rapidnet.com/~jbeard/bdm/exposes/teresa/general.htm (snip)

The problem was her Roman Catholic belief that personal suffering helps to earn one's salvation. She thought suffering was good, and she didn't use pain relievers in her clinics. She had said that the suffering of the poor is something very beautiful and the world is being very much helped by the nobility of this example of misery and suffering. Many Catholic priests and nuns, to this day, wear hair undergarments, put stones in their shoes, flagellate themselves and otherwise try to merit heaven by suffering. Poverty and suffering are not simply endured, but are sought and even created. Just as she hoped to earn her way to heaven through her own deprivation and suffering, so "Mother" Teresa hoped to help her patients as well to reach heaven through the suffering she imposed upon them.

What a bunch of nutbags. :eyes:

4. Funny how only the poor are supposed to suffer
Hey poor people! Suffer and like it because, um, some supernatural being will reward you after you die! Yeah! Now don't do any protesting!

5. He got one thing right
He was expressing "an opinion regarding a subject that has no objective evidence".

6. That's called cognitive dissonance
And he's got a pretty bad case of it, especially since he admits it freely up front and doesn't see any problem with it.
