I admit I'm not "normal" within statistical representations of "faith" expression, but I don't think it invalidates my POV. I think my response was a little snarky, but....grrr. I do not enjoy the "fundamentalist atheist" meme. My evo-psych hypothesizing was intentionally cranky, and I am without pride in engaging in it, even satirically. (Okay, maybe proud, a little.)

Thoughts? Are you, um, normal?

1. good god (no pun intended)
Now it's coming from the left, too.

I'm about ready to get the hell out of this country. I don't know how much longer I can stand the idiocy.

3. Yeah nice to see that type of bigotry out in the open. NOT
Calling atheism not normal is not far off from saying its a mental illness.

5. pretty much
not to mention the required "Dawkins is an asshole" arguments, that for some reason prove something about atheism.

2. damn
Skinner locked it before I could have fun.

FWIW it's worth, I'm so "fundamentalist" atheist that I actually do call myself an antitheist. I think beliefs in the supernatural to real harm to our society, and should be disagreed with. Hopefully, I'll have the energy/patience to go back into R/T one of these days and pick up the fight again.

We need to put this on the front door of the R/T forum:

Locking. Feel free to argue the merits of atheism (in our Religion forum).

How many complaints have we heard about the atheists "ruining" threads in R/T? Because obviously it's supposed to be an Echo Chamber/Amen Corner for religious believers, not grumpy non-believers?

IOW, we've been using R/T exactly as it should be used. But we knew that. Heh!

As for the main topic, I agree with that former dead guy up there, Lazarus. (BTW, what happened after JC raised you from the dead? The New Testament describes a fairly unusual event, then just leaves us hanging - as usual.)

I'm an anti-theist who gets more anti all the time. Especially when I wade thru some of the glurge in R/T.

At first I called myself a "Fundamentalist Atheist" just to annoy the religiously inclined who like to throw that term around.

But the more I thought about it, the more that name made sense. Want me to believe in a god? Then show me proof. Not Hallmark anecdotes, not a marketing pitch about "a god-shaped hole" (which your particular product is always available to fill, at a price).

Just one good proof. Robert G. Ingersoll was making the same request over a hundred years ago. Some Greeks were making it thousands of years ago. So we're in good company.

And hell no, I'm not "normal." That wouldn't be any fun at all.

7. I've been thinking about that "Fundamentalist Atheist" label.
To me, a standard fundie is someone who will not give up their religious views even if the evidence is against them.

If they had to give up all but one platform to stand on, the one thing they'd keep is their faith.

That would mean that a fundamentalist atheist was someone would not give up their atheism no matter what the evidence said.

I'm not that kind of an atheist, and I'd venture to say that no one else here is, either.

The one platform that I'd stand on in the absence of all else is reason -- the notion that examining the facts, logically and honestly is the only way to determine what's true.

So I'm a Fundamentalist Rationalist.

The atheism is just a side effect.
