I see threads in R&T like "Well the Church executed Giordano Bruno, what else might they be wrong about?".

Well, DUHHHH..... Kepler, Galileo, all kinds of stuff.

I wish I could tie these people to the sofa and make them watch all 13 episodes of COSMOS.

Repeatedly.

If they'd quit dithering they could go do good stuff like helping others....naaah, that would involve getting out of their cocoon and DOING SOMETHING.

1. Because to believe is to be afraid.

Seriously, if you believe in the kind of nonsense required, every single day can challenge your faith in some small way because the beliefs are at odds with reality. If you were constantly confronted by evidence that your beliefs are nonsense, wouldn't you be afraid?

3. I think they compartmentalize

and keep that belief stuff locked up tight away from all the everyday stuff that tells them it's a load of hooey.

They'd be nutty to the point of being incapable of functioning if they didn't.
