Facebook irony of the day.
So about a year ago, a girl I dated in high school (remember, I was at a Catholic seminary at the time) put in a friend request on Facebook. The whole breakup thing was kind of awkward, but I accepted because, hell, it's been 2.5 decades. Made a couple attempts to post on her wall and never got a response. Since high school, I have obviously become a different person and she has moved further to the right. So I have to read her posts about conservative Catholicism and how bad the Dems are, etc, but I just let it go. Probably going to make a list of people I really don't need to read updates from and who don't need to read mine (I have a lot of former students that are friends that can go in that category, but I digress).

Soooooo, anyway, today she posts this little gem:
Great line of the day: "It is hard to overestimate
just how dull, dumb, and monotonous radical socialism is to people who
are forced to listen to it all the time."

I'm torn. I have not been overly "new atheist" on my Facebook (though I have been pretty far left liberal) because my Mom was my friend. But she's dead now. So do I just let this one go or do I post what I would like to post:
Same thing can be said for Christianity.

This would probably mean that a lot of my relatives would be pissed, but I don't think I really care.

Thoughts?

1. Ah, go ahead!

I refuse to do social networking because I'm an anti-socialist. Kidding! I'm basically a grumpy loner. And most of the people in my past are there for a good reason. Then there's the whole privacy thing, etc. etc.

But a similar situation popped up when my elderly Mom added me to all her friends' email chains.

Creeping Jebus! One of the first things I got was the classic "Madalyn Murray O'Hair Wants To Ban Religious Programming!!!" I immediately hit "Reply All" and told them the facts, complete with Snopes link. You can imagine how much they appreciated that.

In my experience, they seemed to get pissed for a while. But soon my mailbox was once again filling up with "Footsteps," "Send This Prayer To 10 People RIGHT NOW OR YOU WILL DIE A HORRIBLE DEATH AND GO TO HELL," "Obama Salutes Fascist-Socialist Flag," etc. etc.

A few more "Reply Allz," and they've pretty much left me alone. YMMV, of course.

You may piss off some relatives, but they will probably get over it. But if they do, they may start trying to convert you again.

I'm not sure if that is a win or not. It was fun annoying them for a while, though.

2. "Obama Salutes Fascist-Socialist Flag?"
Is that one real? Well, not REAL, real, but is the claim a real claim? You know what I mean...

5. No, that was just my usual hyperbole.
But I have seen even weirder things said about the Prez. He's a voodoo guru, for one. Learned it in Africa.

6. wouldn't it

8. It's a win when they start keeping that crap to themselves
because they didn't like what happened when they added you to the spam list.

If you can still speak civilly back and forth on unrelated issues, it's a double win.

4. Update:
I went with the following:

Same thing could be said about religion. Or "Obama's a socialist." Or darn near anything.

11. Great response.
Not directly challenging, might get a few folks to think. I like those the best.

12. Nicely done. That's always tricky.
I ended up walking away from Facebook altogether, for many reasons. But a large one was that the value of easily keeping up with friends and family wasn't worth putting up with the constant Fox News talking points put forward as status updates. Raised my blood pressure too much! :)
