Anyone else sick of the Bible posts that pop up in GD?
Edited on Wed Aug-04-10 12:20 PM by laconicsax
You know, the ones that go like this:
Bible citation/reference

[text of quote/reference in italics]

[(forced) analogy to RW douchebaggery/evil] [personal anecdote expounding on the glory of religion (it's always Christianity)] [call for literal interpretation of referenced passage]

[veiled NTS comment]

I used to just roll my eyes at these. That gave way to posting a comment on the idiocy of using the Bible as a moral compass. Now I'm just so tired of seeing these posts I don't know what to do anymore. They're a perfect illustration of Christian privilege that people feel no shame about suggesting that other people live their lives according to the OP's interpretation of a religious text.

Is it over the line to alert and suggest this dreck be moved to one of the fairy-tale groups where believers can engage in all the theological mutual masturbation they want?

1. I've seen most of the real dreck moved to R/T
by the mods, so I think an alert is in order.

2. You'd feel better if you prayed to a Divine Thing.
And insisted that everybody else join you.

That winner of a thread started out in GD, then got dumped in R/T. The OP wasn't happy about that. Probably since in that group, he knew his little circle-jerk would attract attention from grumpy non-believers.

4. Or metaphorically speaking, we offer you an apple.
:hi:

Since metaphors are the Big Thing in R/T right now...

5. an apple a day
is apparently enough to get you banished from a garden.

You know, I know people that cover their plants with chicken wire to protect them from rabbits.

God should have done the same thing with this tree. Or make the fruit smell like pig shit.

7. Not over the line at all -
I get sick of the implication that because it's "christian" it's inherently good or "right". Whackjobs.

Lib-Xers in R/T quote it ALL the time, when anybody brings up the subject of misogyny in Xianity:

Paul, in Galatians 3:28: There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

Awww...isn't that neat? We're all ONE! Paul must have been a feminist!

Paul, in 1 Corinthians, after many other verses putting wives under their husbands. And not necessarily just in The Biblical Sense:

14:34 - Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law.

14:35 And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.

Naturally, for those verses you can find reams of that all-important CONTEXT!!!, attempting to prove that Paul didn't really mean exactly what he said.

9. it's interesting
that Christians are simultaneously literalists and metaphorialists (I made up a word!) when it comes to Biblical moral guidance
