Good.

I'm buying his new book.

Hey, does Richard Dawkins have any new book in the works?

2. The Yahoo comments are both sad and funny.

Oh boy, the believers are getting up on their hind legs and barking about this story!

Sad because the display of ignorance is just jaw-dropping. Nothing original - "He will burn in hell." "Science is a religion too." "All science is just a theory."

Funny because...well, mostly for the same reason. Boneheads who probably dropped out of the Fast-Food Service curriculum at East Jesus Tech are actually trying to debate physics with Stephen Hawking. While bitching endlessly about "arrogant scientists."

Who, of course, they can thank for the opportunity to spew their deathless prose onto the Internet.

If we'd waited on god(s) for communication technology, we'd still be trying to come up with an alphabet.

3. It's been on the front page of CNN forever

I loved this quote from their article:
"'Science provides us with a wonderful narrative as to how may happen, but theology addresses the meaning of the narrative,' said Alexander, director of The Faraday Institute for Science and Religion."

No. It. Fucking. Doesn't. It addresses fuck all. The only thing theology does is pore over ancient texts and imagine new ways to twist their meanings into whatever political and social ideology you wish.

It's all horseshit. When people spend years deconstructing Harry Potter books, we call them creepy. Do the same with a book of mythology, and you get called a "theologist" and get a PhD.

edit: also this:
"And Fraser Watts, an Anglican priest and Cambridge expert in the history of science, said that it's not the existence of the universe that proves the existence of God.

But, he said, 'a creator God provides a reasonable and credible explanation of why there is a universe, and ... it is somewhat more likely that there is a God than that there is not. That view is not undermined by what Hawking has said.'"

How is it fucking credible? Why is there God? You've done nothing but arbitrarily decided that the logical path stops there.

5. Hawking should know better than to try to confuse their small brains with real science.
Good thing he's way over there across the pond, where his countrymen sent their crazy fundie whackos 4 centuries ago to practice their superstitions in the colonies.

Have you noticed that the most famous atheists all seem to come from the UK? In Britain, atheists still get invited to their friends' dinner parties. Here, you could be a serial killing rapist who performs abortions in the public square, and you'd find more acceptance than someone who doesn't believe in a Creation Fairy Tale. I say next time the Brits wanna send us their religious cult members, give us the druids: at least we could worship megalithic structures and get drunk on Honey Mead all day.

7. This seems like a good place
to recall that brilliant comment by someone (Bill O'Reilly, maybe?) that Stephen Hawking would have been allowed to die as a child if he had been brought up in the evil socialist british public health system.

10. It's funny how what he said is nothing new or groundbreaking.
I first read that a flat universe would be be able to create itself years ago and as far as I know, a flat topology has been known for years.
