I am not familiar enough with the writings of Marcus Aurelius, but I really like this quote.

1. A good one, definitely.
MA sounds like one of those uppity militant fundamentalist New Atheists!

Suh is a douche, deal with it.

2. Tis the time of year when I teach Existentialism in Brit Lit
(we read Hamlet and then do a short intro to Existentialism and then watch Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead and then write an essay). I love existentialism (which this quotation reminds me of--I'm not just completely babbling here). It is also good to see the kids make the mental shift from "That's a really, really depressing philosophy" when we cover the "there is no meaning or purpose to us being here" to "Boy, every decision I make is really, really important if there is no meaning beyond what I create."

Off-topic side note: I was checking Netflix to see if R&G are Dead streamed since we only have an old VHS copy at school, and found Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Undead. An OK movie about vampires and Shakespeare. Ralph Machio (sp? The original Karate Kid) is in it.

7. I wish I was in your class, I just NOW watched R&G are Dead!
I absolutely LOVED it. I don't know how I could have missed it all these years. I love Roth and Oldman and my love for them has since grown! And it is definitely on Netflix unless they have removed it this week.

3. It is a great quote but,
I did a little search and it might not be his.

This guy has a couple reasons why: http://threeshoutsonahilltop.blogspot.com/2011/06/marcus-aurelius-and-source-checking.html

And if you trust wikiquotes: http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Marcus_Aurelius#Quotes

6. Thanks, man. I found it using "Stumble Upon"
Edited on Wed Nov-02-11 08:32 PM by A HERETIC I AM
which is, in case you aren't aware, a web surfing application you can customize to your likes and it will randomly find stuff applicable to what you list as interests. One of mine is religion/skepticism and it finds items like the above all the time. The post of mine toward the bottom of the page with the quote from Ms. O'Hair is also the result of Stumbling.

www.stumbleupon.com

I just liked the quote, but this being the intertubes and all, one never knows.

Thanks for taking the time to Google.

11. When I'm not DUing, I'm StumblingUpon!
I have to keep myself from losing track of time with the Stumbling. It's my latest addiction.

9. I hear that misattribution of a quote is the mark of a bigot.
Heard it in R/T, so it must be true.

10. Well, shit. I guess I'll go out back and beat the shit out of myself then.
hee hee.

Hmmmm....I'll add that as one more reason I don't read the R/T forum very often.
