Poll question: What flavor of atheist are you?
What with the discussions going on in GD today, I was wondering how my fellows here in this group think about this thing we call nonbelief. Do you feel you are a/an...

(Comments welcome. I'm open to changing poll options up until I can't any longer)

Yeah, maybe we should ask the kind folks in R&T what we are. They are generally more than willing to let us know, and correct us when the need arises.

23. Pure atheist.
We live in a mechanistic and materialistic universe. The laws of thermodynamics have more relevance than the Ten Commandments. There's a space in science for God, but if there's a God in the space it's cold, distant, and probably has no conception of our exitence. There certainly aren't any angels sitting on clouds.

25. non - apologetic atheist
I have been forced all my life to be respectful of their before meal prayers, invocations and feeling while they refuse to respect my beliefs as legitimate. To them we are a bunch of loser heathens who are going to hell.

I had so looked forward to going to the state convention and turning my back during the invocation this year but because of family health problems I can't go - that's $150 in hotel fees gone.

29. My favorite rhetorical trick:
Ask ANY believer to define God....
then ask why they believe in it....
(most will attempt to describe a non-gender, non-specific, nonthing....)

35. Agnostic
Edited on Thu Jun-09-05 08:55 PM by enlightenment
I'm a fence sitter on just about every issue (except politics. I used to be, back when I felt like I could -- but no more). I believe, for myself, that fence sitting allows me a certain measure of distance from most topics.

I would debate, however, if agnosticism is a "flavor" of atheism. Seems to me that atheists are definitely off the fence.

Not a problem for me; just an interesting exercise in semantics.

on edit: can't spell

36. Good point
I'd change the title phrase were I able to at this point to something more generic. Perhaps atheism is a "flavor" of agnosticism? Or perhaps it is better described as a continuum of dis/belief...

37. I like the idea of a continuum,
(fits right into my sensibilities, after all!)

Not long ago I was reading about a new methodology of "categorizing" sexuality/gender -- the idea was that a simple continuum was too limiting to accommodate the varieties of feelings on the issue, so the researcher came up with a multi-dimensional grid (kind of reminded me of that three-dimensional chess game).

I think the issue of faith, belief/non-belief, and religion is at least as complicated as gender and sexuality. Perhaps a similar hypothesis would prove useful.

38. Agnostic in theory, Atheist in practice
As the poll states, we can't know either way, which I feel compelled to acknowledge, so I consider myself an agnostic. However, I have no use for organized religion. I meditate, so I guess that can be considered spirituality....
