I just cracked up reading this in Richard Dawkin's "The Ancestor's Tale," which I highly recommend, by the way. Haeckel was also an outspoken atheist, as well as a zoologist. He referred to God as "the gaseous invertebrate."

1. "The Great Gas in the Sky"
Was a reference made in Lothar-Bucheim's novel "Das Boot"

"Oh, I do, Indeed, I DO believe in the Great Gas in the Sky..."
