What do you love about your fellow atheists? What makes us so great? Come on, share the love!

I think our greatest strength comes from the fact that although there are many paths to atheism, and many interpretations and applications of atheism, we aren't hindered by preconceptions or superstitions from accepting each other where we are. I have yet to see an atheist chastize another atheist for not being godless in the right way. We can disagree with each other over a beverage and not take it personally and still be friends the next day. That's very cool.

You make an interesting observation about us not attacking each other over degrees of atheism. I never thought of that before, but it's pretty much true. I've seen agnostics telling us what we should think, and occasionally a "strong atheism/weak atheism" philosophy circle-jerk. But that's about it.

I guess I just love it that we have this space to be heathens in.

...but I read this group's postings everyday. Mostly, I don't post because, inevitably, someone's already said what I would've. That's probably why I don't post a lot in general.

But, anyway, addressing your post, I think my sig line sums up this group pretty well.

8. I tend to post in spurts.

I'll post like 25 times within a couple days, and then I won't post at all for a week or more. I guess I'm a "moody" poster. :shrug: I'll try harder. I've been on DU for close to a year, but I still feel like a newbie without that (1000+ posts) mark in my corner.

9. Have you tried any of

the other groups ?
I'm finding myself hanging in them more often than not.
GD can be exhausting and the Lounge seems a little too harsh sometimes.
You can really have great discussions because the threads don't drop like a stone.
But don't think I'm pushing you, I understand, I need my space too-trust me.
It's just nice to hear from another evil atheist !

12. well.... there is a certain type of atheist that annoys me

the type who chooses to keep his views to himself and not "make waves' WHO ALSO thinks it's his duty to chastise the rest of us over and over for speaking our mind, the "don't make waves" type. that is fine if he would rather make nice and remain silent but he needs to shut the fuck up when he tries to scold others for standing up for their beliefs.

Plus ... I like the fact that we haven't been drafted into something that we're going to have to appease and defend every day for the rest of our lives.

I like the fact that we're happy to say we don't know what happens when you die, and we're not running around killing people because someone said it was a good way to get laid after death.

I like the fact that atheism has no sects.

I love you guys, and I would never have met you were it not for freethought.

I think we have a better sense of humour.

And I like the fact that atheism is the fastest-growing "religion" on the face of the Earth.

15. Atheists here are good people with open minds

The only thing wicked here is your senses of humor!

This is a refuge where I can go whenever I see or hear or read of some outrageous religious claim that is completely at odds with reality or common sense. I know you all will pick me up, brush me off, boost my spirits, and send me back into "battle" armed with new ammunition.

Seriously, this group does more to keep me sane than any other site on the Internet.

17. It's the sanity...

It's the notion that things should "make sense." And then the capacity to examine and think about them. I don't know anybody who's atheist who thinks that way because they were told to think that way.

And it's the (necessary) capacity to listen to some crazy shit and say, "whatever..." Well, sometimes.

I love that atheists can grasp the concept of doing what's right just because that's the moral thing to do - not because someone promised them rewards if they did, not because someone threatened punishment if they didn't.

What better reason is there for doing the right thing? How can somebody consider themselves moral for doing something because some spirit is watching over them promising them bliss if they do it, and torture if they don't? Then some of them sin, pray for forgiveness/confess and do the same damn thing all over again the next week :eyes:

28. Meeting another outspoken atheist is SO rare in the real world...

that it literally takes my breath away when it happens...I remember when I was working to elect Howard Dean, I turned to a woman next to me and said "This must be something like what people feel when they go to church". She actually reared back from me and said "We are a SECULAR family". Then I floored her right back when I told her we were too! We still get together for dem events, and our kids are in "hog-heaven" playing together like the little heathens they are.

By the way, when the stats came out on Dean supporters, I was absolutely gobsmacked to see that we were 38% "no religion", as opposed to the 8% or so that claim no religion amongst the regular population...

Howard's efforts on behalf of the children of Vermont and their medical insurance needs initially got my interest, but when he said, loud and clear, "I'm TIRED of fundamentalist preachers telling us what to do", he got me off the couch and into the fray.

So, yeah, I LOVE this forum, I feel like a majority, if only in this corner of cyberspace.

Various polls over the years here at DU show us to be neck and neck with believers overall, but in here, I'm FAMILY!

29. I was fortunate

enough to have Howard Dean as my Governor.
He is truly a great man because he is THE REAL DEAL.
Anyone who has ever met him can attest to that.
Thanks for working so hard for him, it really hurts to think of how we would be on the road to recovery if he was our President.
