Pop culture Woo-Woo alert!
Edited on Fri Aug-19-05 10:46 AM by onager
"Supernatural" guitarist Carlos Santana is facing a wrongful termination lawsuit brought by a former employee who says he was fired because he was not "enlightened" enough.

A spiritual adviser for Santana and his wife, Deborah, told the couple that the employee wasn't close enough to God and his finding led to the firing, according to the lawsuit.

The man is seeking more than $100,000 in damages.

This story is all over L.A. radio stations this morning. I think it just went to court today. I posted this in R&T.

Also in R&T, some of my papal remarks woke up a Catholic Woo-Woo who warned me that he would tell me things "I don't want to hear."

This ought to be good. Apparently the Oranges secretly installed all the Popes.

That would make more sense if it were the Lemons...(bad joke, sorry, it's early...)

1. How does one become a "Spiritual Adviser" to a pop star?
Sounds like a sweet gig to me.

"Hey Carlos, God says to give me a pay raise or go to hell".

2. Well, it's pretty simple...
Just browse the "New Age" section at any bookstore...no need to actually BUY that pap. Learn a smattering of the jargon, train yourself in how to use windy, meaningless phrases about "vibrations" and such.

And presto! You're in business!

Or maybe you could just see the movie "Contact" and pay close attention to Matthew McConaughey's "spiritual adviser" character.
Ugh!

3. Reminds me of a L&O episode I saw last night
A suspect had one of these woo-woos (i love that expression by the way) as a "spiritual advisor" - a failed priest or minister of some kind (church work was to much work for him).

He was paid to be a spiritial advisor - and feed the dogs and other meanial crap around the house.

The guy couldn't even answer a simple question in a straight forward way. "Was it her gun?" "Well is a philsophical way I suppose it was." that kind of crap.

The suspect tried to claim privledge for stuff she'd said to him because he was a "spirital advisor"

MOre special privledges for the woo-woos of the world.

4. Popes
Maybe the Catholic woo-woo should read the book "Bad Popes" by E.R. Chamberlain. It's a riot! I'm reading it right now. (Anyone else read it?)

5. Thanks for the recommendation!
I really want to read that one.

It might even make me madder than David Kertzer's The Popes Against The Jews. Anyone who could read that book and still defend the Catholic Church against anti-Semitism is even more delusional than Karen Hughes or Peggy Noonan.

The best part: Kertzer took most of his information directly from primary sources--the official Vatican publications that are still in their archives.

6. Doesn't Santana think he was born on Venus or something like that?

7. I think so.

I also remember, at one point, Santana seemed to think he was some kind of reincarnated Indian swami or something.

That was when he insisted that everyone call him "Deva-dip Carlos Santana." Which, of course, the ungodly among us immediately modified to "Deva-dipshit."

Speaking of born on Venus...while checking out music sites recently, I came across a brief mention of the guy who sang lead for ? and The Mysterians, of "96 Tears" fame.

The Mysterians took their name from an old sci-fi movie, but this guy was raving about how he has been in contact with real space aliens for years.

The Space Brothers have assured him that he will not only have a big comeback, but will be the most famous pop singer in the Universe. Or something like that. He was somewhat...uh...incoherent.

It was more interesting that they had to change the title of the song to get the record company to release it. (For you youngsters, this was way back in 1966.)

The original title was "69 Tears" but the record execs thought that was too risque, considering some of the lyrics:

And when the sun comes up I'll be on top
You'll be right down there, looking up...

8. I always wondered about the Devadip thing
I saw him yesterday in the Woodstock movie on VH1 classic. Great guitar player, just gullible apparently.
