I know it's got its rough edges, and Data uses contractions have the time, but it isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be.

Season 2 is also underrated... and season 3 is when everything comes together perfectly...

But s1 and s2 are wrongfully maligned at times; the intellect is clearly there. Even if the production sometimes isn't. :D

1. What I find interesting about Data

as Brent Spiner got better at acting the role, he appeared less human and more robotic; even as the character of Data grew less robotic and more human.
