Something to make HypnoToad's head explode: Jennifer Saunders tapped as the next Dr. Who?

Absolutely Fabulous star Jennifer Saunders is tipped to be the first ever female Time Lord.

The comic, famous for her role as outrageous Edina, in is in talks to take on the role of Doctor Who - albeit for a one-off special episode.

A source told The Sun: "She's in the running and we all think she would be fantastic."

Fans of the show were left stunned earlier this month when David Tennant's Dr Who co-star Catherine Tate let slip during a radio interview that it could be his last series.

*snip*

I really can't picture this, but it sounds...interesting at least. :)

1. NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
As much as I like Saunders' work, I think the show has very well established that timelords do not change genders when they regenerate.

2. Well until last season's finale... (Warning: SPOILER for Season 3)
it was pretty well established that Time Lords don't gain magical powers and fly around the room when people chant their name, either. ;-)

I've heard the production plan is to complete a 4th season and then do just a couple of specials for the 5th season. Tennant has committed to a few other projects and likely could use some time off. The new Who doesn't seem to take itself too seriously, so an episode where another actor steps in to play the Doctor could very well happen - explained with a throwaway line or two. Such as explaining why Peter Davison had less hair and more girth in the Children in Need special. :)

4. Isn't it established that they can only regen 10 times
and that the current version is the 10th and presumably last?

I figured they would have to come up with a new twist to get past that if the show continued to make money past the time the current actor wanted to stay in the role. Perhaps the 'twist' is the gender change...somehow they'll make that into an explanation of how to get past the numerical limit.

5. It's actually 12 regenerations
But in the past they've skirted the issue. For instance, The Master was given a new sequence of 12 regenerations by the Time Lords in exchange for helping out The Doctor.

3. That would get me to watch it. I always forget about it as it is.
I end up catching the last couple of minutes every damn week and smacking myself in the forehead for forgetting...again!

6. Having sat through "Voyage of the Damned", it's safe to say my head already went *boom*
I am so tired of RTD's dilettante scribble hacks he likes to call "scripts".
