Since he joined the writing staff during the 3 rd Season of Enterprise Head Writer and Producer Manny Coto has hit a series of Home Runs with the Star Trek fan base which has solidified his position in the hearts and minds of Trek Fandom. However according to Coto the journey is only beginning, and over the course of season 4 which is in its seventh week of transmission in the US . He intends to pull back the rusty curtains of the aging franchise and attempt to explore some of the more dated Frontiers that Star Trek's rich 37 years of history has to offer. Talking in the new issue of Star Trek Magazine Coto revealed some more of his plans for the 4 th season of the Prequel series.
“I look at Season Four of Enterprise as the year that will fulfil the promise of a prequel series,” Coto revealed to the UK Magazine. “Season Four is really going to be dealing with the beginnings of the formation of the Federation. It's going to explore the links between Enterprise and the old Star Trek – the Kirk, Spock series – and it's going to place Enterprise firmly in the Star Trek Universe. It will deal with subject matter and topics that have been mentioned or alluded to in the other incarnations of Star Trek, and explore them in a deeper way.”
Thus far Coto has been a man of his word, the recent premiere of ‘The Augments' trilogy of episodes which guest starred Star Trek: The Next Generations Brent Spiner as Dr. Arik Soong proved a success with a large proportion of the fan base. And it appears that the Trilogy which will focuses on the Vulcan Civil War, which began last Friday with the episode titled ‘The Forge' could well eventually prove to be just as big a hit as ‘The Augments' Trilogy. When casting for the aforementioned ‘Augments' trilogy though Brent Spiner was not originally going to be a part of the mini arc. Originally Coto had intended to use the original Star Trek series character of Colonel Green as the villain of the piece who Original Series aficionados will remember from the TOS episode titled ‘The Savage Curtain'. It was not until Rick Berman told Coto that Spiner was interested in a role on the series, that Coto re – wrote his script to accommodate Spiner. In spite of this the writer said, “The Three episodes are tremendous. I think they could well prove to be the best episodes of the season.”
Apparently Coto says that there is much more to come, and being the enthusiastic SF fan that he is, he is just gagging to reveal a few more tantalising tid bits of information.
“I don't want to give to much away just yet, but I will tell you that I want to do an arc that takes place on Andoria, which we've never been to,” he reveals. “There's a story we're working on which will suggest that the origins of the Andorians is closely tied to Earth. We're also working on a Colonel Green story – I want to do a very harrowing Colonel Green arc. I'm determined to get Colonel Green into this show.
“I do want to do one or two episodes that take place on the Cloud City of Stratos,” Coto continues while referring to the city which first appeared in the Original series episode ‘The Cloud Miners'. “I want to see early stages of that. I think it's a very fertile place for a story line.
“Ultimately, all of these conflicts will lead into the beginning of the formation of the Federation.”
