Favorite "Star Trek" novels?
I dusted off a couple of old "Star Trek" novels in preparation of the movie coming out. And when I was in Connecticut a couple of weeks ago I picked up a few more of the novels from my parent's house.

I'm reading "How Much for Just the Planet" right now, but I have a lot of respect for Diane Carey's work.

In fact, I just wrote the Wikipedia article for her novel "Dreadnought!"

Takes longer to write than to read! Check it out...

2. Ishmael, of course
Funny you should ask this question. I just dug out my box of STTOS books I'd put away in the 1980s, so my 10 y.o. could read them. She acted like she'd found the Ark of the Covenant or something.

4. I loved Diane Carey's "Final Frontier"...
And "Best Destiny", which I read in the week before the new "Star Trek" movie opened up. Her discussions of morals and ethics, the humanity of her writing... man, she does an excellent job. Her books are generally very hard to put down!

7. I haven't read many so I don't have a favorite, though Dark Mirror wasn't bad
I'll tell you which are the worst, though: the ones that agonizingly attempt to tie together a mish-mash of elements from the various series, in an attempt to achieve maximum fan service at the expense of the source material. There's one book, for instance, that heaps Q, Trelayne, the God from the fifth movie, and other assorted omnipotent beings. The result was one of the worst piles of shit ever committed to paper, ill-conceived and misbegotten.

Whoever green-lighted that drek must've said "if you can guarantee me a few more zeros in front of the decimal, then we have a deal."
