Working though it with my 12 year old son. Pretty fun reading. Campbell can't write dialog worth beans, but he has a good way with battle sequences and keeping the suspense up. I was particularly struck by his characterization of the enemy "the Syndicate worlds", as being the ultimate expression of Republican ideology, while having his side, "the Alliance" become corrupted over time to be just like them. A lot of the series is about how the lead protagonist works to bring back honor and values lost in the Alliance military over centuries of war.
