What do you think of Dark City?

I love this film, but some of my friends hate it.

1. I loved it

I saw it on video just before I watched The Matrix, and for all their similarities in storyline Dark City was far superior, especially with respect to acting and production design.

I'm always a bit bemused by the conceit that a bunch of aliens would somehow need humans to renew their species. Like we're such great paragons of life-force, stuck on this planet and choking on our own hate and filth.

But I still liked it!

7. A classic

One of the best science-fiction movies of at least the last 20 years. The floating, baldheaded guys were so scary that they've been ripped off ever since (most notably by Buffy the Vampire Slayer).

12. Rented it from Netflix thinking it was a different movie.

Was blown away. I'm one of those that thinks you can't make a good film noir in color. This comes as close as any to pulling it off. Watching it with the directors comments is a must. Any one that says they picked up on all of the symbolism is a bald faced liar. It took me about 20 minutes to figure what was going on.

14. I liked the Matrix the first time....

...when it was called Dark City.

I have to say that I loved this movie. I think many of it's plot points were stolen for the Matrix (which I also loved). While the details are different, they're both movies about waking up to a strange reality in a sense. Classic Sci-Fi hero cycles. Where Matrix though was a shoot em up, this was a bit more cerebral, and much darker.

I love the Ebert commentary track. I'm not a huge Ebert fan, but I think it says something about the quality of this movie when Ebert does a commentary track for it.

I continue to skip the exposition. The movie holds up overtime, and is one of my favorite films. Does anyone know if the director wanted the exposition, or did the studio force him to include it?
