Enjoy! I'll have a full statistical breakdown in an hour or so.

early breakdown of ages:

Average age of this cast is 35.13, which is identical to the average age of the Africa cast. Only Borneo and Thailand were older.
Is tied with Marquesas and Australia for fewest number of people in their 20's, with 6.
Tied with Australia for the 3rd highest median age, 32.

1. There had been talk about there being a former
astronaut on this season.
Here he is:

And Tina Sheer was supposed to be on Guatemala but had to bow out d/t the death of her son. Interest is high in her because of her profession.

I'm interested in this one.

This man could be tougher than anyone gives him credit for. Most of the time you have the younger ones underestimating their elders on the show. He sounds like he could give them a run for their money on some of the challenges.

2. The astronaut's cool
I look for him and the retired fighter pilot to hook up with a good alliance, maybe bring in Mr Miyagi (his term, not mine) for a nice triad.

I'll be honest, none of the women impress me this time around. Tina's profession would seem to bode well for her, except that the game isn't about surviving, it's about Surviving. That's why Bobby is so impressive.

3. I don't know how well she'll play.
The spoilers have been impressed w/ her but she'll probably be under a lot of emotional stress. She's playing too soon after the death of her son. From what I understand, she was ready to leave for Guatemala when he was killed.
The astronaut has some great buzz as does Aras(the first one outed by the spoilers). Both are possible F4 candidates.

7. Reminder about spoilers in a non-spoiler thread
If we can be careful not to even mention spoilers in a non-spoiler thread I would appreciate it. Some people on this board are vigilant to avoid spoiler info. I know you did not intend anything by your comment, but even saying "The spoilers have been impressed w/ her" suggests that some spoilers think she will go far in the game. Some famous spoilers, like "ChillOne" (who wrote a terrible book about his spoiling activities of a past season), try to find out all sorts of secret info like when family members of the cast took flights to see if they lasted until the family member challenge, and more. Some go as far as getting on boats and trying to spy during filming. It is all a bit much for me. While the occasional spoiler may seem like no big deal, knowing that some spoilers believe someone will go far can ruin the game for someone who wants to watch it as Burnett presents it, not find out in advance what happens. Spoiling has its place for those who want to engage in it, but at the same level is watching the tV show as it airs on CBS without any spoiled info. I actually do not care much about spoilers. I do not seek them out, but if you visit enough survivor boards finding out what others think of the characters, you can not avoid it. That doe snot mean we should not try hard not to "spoil" the show for those who try to avoid spoiler info at all costs.

If the thread does not say Spoiler in its title, it is probably best to avoid any mention of potentially spoiling information. Sorry to seem like a dick. I know this sounded like I am a dick, but I just want to keep the information flow on this website going, and spoiling info in non-spoiler threads will mean some DU friends of mine will stop reading and participating in Survivor discussions.

Anyway, enjoy the new season and I look forward to talking Survivor with you.

9. Thanks, doc
I appreciate it. If the spoilers get mentioned in here, I'll have to bail, again. Sigh.

10. Its not for lack of trying
I enjoy your participation in survivor discussions, but I understand why you bail when people slip up and post spoilers without warning. I'll try to remind everyone to self-enforce the rules here, but sometimes it happens. Oh well. Hope you stick around though, because I have a feeling this will be a wild season. I love what you mentioned about the one sent to Janu Island (which is freaking hysterical) competing and staying on Janu Island for some time, only to return later (maybe after finding the idol or beating all the other Janu Island cast aways). The four tribe thing can't last long, but I think it will go more than the first episode. we will see.

4. I like this cast
I do not like the idea of breaking the players up by sex and age, though it always seems to happen naturally, so it will be interesting to watch what happens when it is forced. The older men seem very impressive as a group. Bruce's karate and physical skills will be fun to watch. Dan and Terry are natural leaders and I wonder if the two of them will mesh or bang heads.

On the women's side, neither group is impressive, but certain members are. I like Cirie. She is a nurse and a physically gifted woman. She will be tough. Plus she went to St. Francis, where my cousin went, so I have a little bias toward her. I also like Misty with the younger females. She is smart and seems strong, which always is a good combination. Sally is a huge fan of the show and that has usually helped others, thought the big fan has never won. Danielle will probably be my "crush" this season. I don't know a great deal about her, but she is very pretty, southern and seems smart, so I will probably fall for her.

Based on what I have seen in the bios and photos, I like Terry from the men and Cirie from the women. Of course I am usually wrong in my early picks, but I will probably go with one of these two.

5. Starts 2 Feb: Here's CNN's article, w/astronaut:
Retired astronaut part of new 'Survivor'

Tuesday, January 10, 2006; Posted: 8:19 a.m. EST (13:19 GMT)

NEW YORK (AP) -- The next cast of CBS' "Survivor" will include a retired astronaut who flew in space three times, twice on the space shuttle Discovery.

The 12th version of the popular game, this time set in Panama, will feature tribes briefly separated by age and an exile where a contestant can profit after stomaching some time alone.

Dan Barry, a 52-year-old ex-astronaut from South Hadley, Massachusetts, is among the 16 cast members. Barry last flew in space in 2001, and he has four space walks to his name. A yoga instructor, nurse, engineer, lawyer, social worker and logging sports performer are among his competitors.

On "Survivor: Panama -- Exile Island," at least one cast member each episode will be sent alone to a separate island miles from the others. Hidden on the island, however, will be an immunity idol.

The next "Survivor" edition begins on CBS February 2.

8. Question -
Look at my next thread. I am wondering if we should wait until after the first episode to pick people.
