Sopranos
ok - so now two episodes into the last season . . .

and each episode had a scene eerily similar to the Godfather . . .

the first was Bobby dropping the gun after his Canadian hit - like Michael's hit on the cop in the restaurant

the second was the christening in episode 2 . . .

will this continue?

the tall tomatoes

3 weeks - 3 Godfather scenes

Is this a tribute to the Godfather of some sort?

4. Its not a coincidence.
Chase loves to pay homage to The Godfather, Goodfellas and Scarface. There are references throughout the series. I suspect each episode of the new season will have a reference to the Godfather, but its not like Chase to stick to any formula. I also think it will be a very boring ending for Tony. I don't see death or jail for him. I'm hoping for either, but chase has set me up so many times and let me down, that I am going with the boring end with Tony still in power. Its unreal since no mob boss ever escapes both death and jail, but ...
I figure the blood bath starts in episode four for those around Tony. I see it coming.

5. I have never noticed it before, but will certainly look for it next week
Goodfellows also, huh. I shall look for those also. I have seen Scarface, but too long ago and not often enough to recognize a scene.

I have also begun to believe in a non-violent end for Tony - not unlike the heart attach of Don Corleone.

That blood bath was very near in episode 3 - with Paulie on the boat. So I don't doubt your prediction for episode 4.

7. Goodfellas
He said he named Carmella after Henry Hill's mother. He also had Chris make a joke referring to his Spider chracter when he shot the bakery guy in the foot in season 2. There are others.

I could see a non-violent death for Tony, though I really think it will be a let down how it ends. Remember when Tony thought they were coming and pulled a machine gun out of his wall. I would love to see him go down in a hail of gunfire. Though it may be for the middle eastern guys and the credit cards.

28. I remember an interview with the creator of the Sopranos...
Edited on Thu May-17-07 10:05 AM by TwoSparkles
...and he said that he thought of and wrote the ending of Tony--FIRST. What happens to Tony--in
the end--was the genesis of the entire show.

That really intrigued me. I hadn't been a Sopranos fan when I heard that, but those words
stuck with me, because I just knew that whatever ending it was---it had to be very intriguing.

Does anyone else remember hearing this too?

I'm a new Sopranos fan. My husband started me watching. I've been reading the Slate columns
and I'm totally into the psychology of Tony. The analysis of him being "vertically split" is
really fascinating.

My husband and I were discussing Tony's psychological split--and how he's the most "human"
of the mob members. However, he's also the most ruthless. He's in and out of two diametrically
opposed worlds---attending Meadow's graduation one minute and killing a good friend the next.
The other mob guys aren't as "human" as Tony. Can you imagine any of THEM in therapy?

Ultimately (in my humble-"Sopranos"-newbie-opinion, of course!) Tony's inability to maintain this
split will do him in. Those other guys are like concrete--they don't analyze what they do
or bat an eyelash when they murder or ruin a life. They'll be fine--while Tony spirals.

I wonder if he won't mentally unravel at the end--and end up turning himself in--confessing
to Dr. Melfy or someone in law enforcement?

not so much. Seemed kind of slow, though watching a guy die of cancer was no picnic (but he did it so well!).

10. The April 29 episode ROCKED!
I loved that episode. Tony down on his luck, his inner gangster comes out. He is such scum. Its easy to fall for him, but once you peal past the interesting character traits, he is just a crook looking to get rich by doing no work.

His wife, his therapist... Certainly showed how addictive and destructive gambling can be, didn't it!

Looked like there's a bit more violence in the coming episodes. I think we're all expecting that. The big question is WHO?

But it could be anyone, if that's what's going to happen. I just hope the ending is plausible as well as entertaining.

Could be Uncle Junior who gives up Tony.

he did act a tad strange this past Sunday - I thought that while watching it

or Christopher - in a drug/alcohol inducted stupor

or AJ - he was pretty upset when he lost his girl and the baby

But I did not see any Godfather tribute this past week. Did I miss one?

19. TONY WHACKED IN LAS VEGAS?
Edited on Tue May-01-07 10:35 PM by medeak
seen at Ceasars Palace filming last episode with makeup showing brutal beating:

Is the biggest mystery of "The Sopranos" final season playing out in Las Vegas this week?

James Gandolfini is in town, reportedly filming the final episode.

The guessing game is on: With Gandolfini here, does that mean Tony Soprano gets whacked in the June 10 finale, fittingly, in the city famous for its mob past?

Or will he survive, so "The Sopranos -- The Movie" remains a viable option?

...as a reason that Tony wouldn't get clipped...

I cannot imagine what they coule possibly explore in a movie that hasn't already been done in the show though...

But then again that hasn't stopped a shitload of other god-awful movies being made in the past though...

22. ok - so I thought this past Sunday's show was great
the Chrisopher-Paulie feud was bound to happen - can't wait to see how this plays out

AJ's losing it . . .

And Meadow is finally back . . .

I think we will see some time spent with Sil in an upcoming episode

And some more time with Carmela and Meadow - Is Carmela having a thing on the side?

That was a total surprise. But I'm not thinking too deeply about the show. I don't want to anticipate anything. I'm just letting things happen as I watch it.

I'm curious, though, as to what's going to happen to AJ. He seems to be a punk one minute and then have a conscience the next. Maybe it's just teen neurosis with a family history of violence thrown in. Poor kid!

I think we're in for a wild ride these last few episodes.

31. (spoiler) Re: AJ
For as long as the show has been on, I have not liked AJ. This past episode was the FIRST time that I felt any sympathy for him at all, and it was full-blown too to where he is now my favorite character on the show.

But I wonder how many of you, while watching that episode, when Meadow comes into his room and he shuts the computer screen, and she says something about him surfing porn... when he sheepishly opened up the screen, I was FULLY expecting to see DU on the screen!!

C'mon, admit it, you did too!

32. So, how does everyone think it will end???
Anyone want to speculate on how The Sopranos will end?

It feels like Tony is unraveling some of his sociopathic tendencies--due to his peyote
revelations and his insight about his mother. I loved his "mothers are the buses" analogy!

Plus, he was very "human" to his son.

I think Tony is going to make the decision to quit the mob.

I think he choses family over Family.

However---we all know how dangerous a decision like that can be. Who knows if he
survives.

Anyone have any thoughts????

I can hardly stand waiting for the next episode. :)

I still think Uncle Junior plays a part in how the series ends. But I'm trying not to speculate and just enjoy it as it happens.

I'm going to miss the series but it looks like HBO has some more good shows on tap.
