We recieved (from a very generous relative) a Sony Bravia 1080P HDTV for Xmas and upgraded our old Cox Cable SA DVR to the "new" (well, apparently out since 2005) SA 8300hd DVR. We also got a Sony Bravia Blu-Ray/DVD player. Hooked everything up with HDMI cables.
Since then, we've had "dropouts" on the sound at approximatly 2 - 5 minute intravals on all recorded programs (HD or non-HD), non-HD channels, and playback of regular DVDs. The only time sound doesn't drop out is when we play Blu-Ray Disks.
Apparently, this is a common issue with Scientific Atlantic DVRs and the Sony Bravia system when using HDMI inputs.
Sony says it's the SA box - a filtering or handshake problem with the SA box on the HDMI setup. Their tech came out and tested the TV. Cox tested input lines, fixed our splitter, replaced the box, and shrugged their shoulders when that didn't fix it; SA provides minimal help to them. Both the Cox and Sony techs told us that the only fix currently available is to use component video and a good set of digital Audio R/W cables. Laz is going to try that out eventually, but he's pissed becuase "Ghoddammit, I wanted to use the best hookups for this setup, and that's HDMI!". He's even talking about replacing the Sony with another brand...(sigh - it's that ADD perfectionist streak kicking in...)
Apparently Sony and SA are in a major pissing contest concerning this, each pointing the finger at the other as to who needs to fix the problem. Looking on forums, it looks as if a lot of other people have this problem when using HDMI connectivity.
Anyway, does anyone know if there's a fix to this other than changing out the cables? The drop-out is very annoying.
