FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Governor Proclaims Today as Bob Crowley Day
AUGUSTA – Governor John E. Baldacci today hosted the winner of the 17th season of Survivor in his office and proclaimed it “Bob Crowley Day” in his honor.
“Bob Crowley took Maine core values -- honesty, dignity and respect -- and displayed them on a national stage,” Governor Baldacci said. “He showed the country what it means to be a true Mainer and how to succeed while still being true to yourself. He is someone who we can all look to as a good role model for our youth, both as a teacher and as a ‘Sole Survivor.’”
Crowley was crowned as the Sole Survivor of Survivor Gabon and recipient of the million dollar grand prize on December 14th of last year. At the age of 57, he is the oldest person to win the competition in the show’s history and the first from Maine to do so.
Crowley is a teacher at Gorham High School and resides in Portland with his family.
The text of the proclamation follows:
WHEREAS, Robert “Bob” Crowley is a resident of Portland and a physics teacher at Gorham High School; and
WHEREAS, Bob Crowley graduated from the University of Maine and received a Masters of Education degree from the University of Southern Maine; and
WHEREAS, Bob Crowley is a hard working individual with a wide range of jobs outside of teaching, including working on a research boat for the Smithsonian in Canada, working as an entomologist for the USDA, and working as a skunk relocater; and
WHEREAS, Bob Crowley was chosen to participate in the 17th season of the CBS reality show Survivor, known as Survivor Gabon; and
WHEREAS, Bob Crowley used his skills as a physicist, outdoorsman, Mainer and overall nice guy to be crowned the champion of Survivor Gabon on Dec. 14, 2008; and
WHEREAS, Bob Crowley received four out of seven votes at the finale, becoming the first Maine resident to win the competition and, at the age of 57, the oldest winner in the history of the show; and
WHEREAS, Bob Crowley continues teaching at Gorham High School, despite his newfound fame, passing on his knowledge and life skills to Maine’s youth; and
WHEREAS, the State of Maine joins Bob’s family – his wife Peggy, sons David and John, daughter Page, and cat William – in being proud of his accomplishments and congratulating him on his success,
NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOHN E. BALDACCI, Governor of the State of Maine, do hereby proclaim February 17, 2009 as
BOB CROWLEY DAY
throughout the State of Maine, and urge all citizens to recognize this observance.
